Fishing in Wanchese

Wanchese Fishing Charters unlock access to North Carolina's legendary Outer Banks angling scene. Nestled on Roanoke Island, this historic fishing village serves as a premier gateway to diverse saltwater adventures. Its strategic location beside Oregon Inlet provides direct routes to the Gulf Stream's blue waters, where prized catches including yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, and mahi-mahi patrol offshore depths.

Inshore enthusiasts find rich opportunities across Roanoke Sound's protected waters, targeting speckled trout, red drum, and flounder around marshes and channels. The village's industrial fishing heritage translates to unparalleled local expertise, with captains leveraging generations of knowledge about seasonal migrations and productive reefs. Nearshore excursions deliver thrilling action with cobia, king mackerel, and amberjack frequenting artificial reefs just miles from shore.

Wanchese Marina functions as the operational hub for professional charters, offering modern fleets equipped for everything from family-friendly sound fishing to extended big-game expeditions. The destination's unique positioning allows anglers to easily transition between sheltered sound fishing, nearshore wrecks, and deep-sea hotspots within a single trip. With reliable year-round fisheries and specialized charters for fly, light tackle, and bottom fishing, Wanchese delivers versatile saltwater experiences that cement its status as a top East Coast angling destination.

Wanchese Fishing Seasons

January
Inshore fishing reigns supreme during the winter, so head out to the sounds and bottom fish for some delicious Redfish and Striped Bass, just make sure to wrap up warm.
February
While the Stripers and Flounder make their way out, the Tuna season is heating up. Hit the inshore waters for the last of the cold water season or head offshore to land a delicious Bluefin.
March
Spring really does bring with it new arrivals. The Bluefin Tuna season is in full swing and Yellowfin start to show up toward the end of the month. Inshore, Drum, Trout, and Bluefish will keep you busy.
April
There are no April showers to worry about in the Outer Banks. As the weather starts heating up, so does the fishing. Expect a range of exciting big game fish in the deeper waters offshore.
May

Expect to find plenty of Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna offshore, along Cobia closer to land. You might even spot the first few Billfish, signaling the start of big game season.

June
School’s out just in time for the season to hit its stride. White and Blue Marlin arrive to the party, giving you the chance to land a real prized monster fish.
July
Stunning Sailfish is the latest addition to the Gulf Stream. Deep sea fishing is the name of the game, and expect to be mesmerized by these stunning creatures as you fight one to the boat.
August
There’s no sign of things cooling off, so get offshore throughout August and make the most of the summer. Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Marlin, and Sailfish will all have you in for the fight of your life.

September
Change is a-coming as the pelagics start to leave the Gulf Stream. But fear not, monstrous Kingfish are on their way and the inshore season is just around the corner.
October
Trout are well and truly back, as are Red Drum inshore. However, when the weather's fine, nothing beats the Tuna action offshore! Head out to the Gulf Stream and get your fill of these monsters!
November
While many may want to stay close to shore during November to try to fill the boat with Drum, Trout, and Bass, there's still plenty going on offshore, where the Tuna bite is in its prime!
December

If you manage to find some good weather in December, you'll want to make the most of the last chance of the year to go offshore and battle Tuna! Otherwise, it will all be about landing smaller fish inshore.
