Fishing in Ocean City

Surrounded by the bay on one side and the ocean on the other, Ocean City is the place to be for all avid fishermen. This precious gem is situated in the heart of the Jersey shore, so it figures why Ocean City fishing charters are all about living and breathing water.

The access to different bodies of water promises a year-round variety of both freshwater and saltwater fish. Tapping into the inlet means looking for Striped Bass, Flounder, Perch, and Tautog. Heading further toward the ocean guarantees dancing with offshore favorites like Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Mako Shark, and Swordfish.

With so many species to target, chances are you’ll find the exact trip that suits you. You can book anything from 2-hour bay fishing to 14-hour offshore reel-screaming action. Ocean City is considered to be "America's Greatest Family Resort", so charter operators will be ready to bring your kids on the water. Inshore trips up to 5 hours are more suitable for families, while longer offshore trips are perfect for big game lovers.

Finding and luring all these species requires local knowledge and Ocean City fishing charters will hook you up with the right equipment along with tips on how to land your desired catch. On top of this, locating the fish is not easy, so intel from the experts born and raised in the area comes in handy.

Rules & Regulations

Having both freshwater and saltwater resources, Ocean City is mindful of its fisheries. This means that residents and visitors aged 16 and older must have a valid license to fish in freshwater. With saltwater, the situation is slightly different, and you’re not required to buy a license but all anglers must register with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program before heading offshore.

Ocean City Fishing Seasons

January

Not sure how to start the year off right? Treat yourself with Striped Bass! They’re hungry and waiting for you to snatch them! Those keener on landing Sharks might be lucky enough to brag with a few photos with Mako Sharks.

February

This is the time for Scup to shine. While Scup might not be your first choice, bear in mind that they’re easy to catch and kids will find them exciting – and your taste buds will thank you for catching them, too.

March

March brings choices. With Amberjack and Flounder slowly entering the scene, and Mako Sharks and Crabs going strong, you won’t be short of options. If you haven’t tried your luck with Crabs yet, early spring is the perfect time to change that.

April

Now that you’ve got the hang of pursuing Mako Sharks, Amberjacks, and Crabs, you can gradually expand your fishing experience by targeting species like Tautog, Bluefish, and Weakfish. And don’t be fooled by its name because Weakfish can put up a good fight.

May

With warmer temperatures, more species are starting to emerge. Flounder, Sharks, and Bluefish are steadily picking up, whereas Amberjack and Weakfish are reaching their peak. But the real sensation is the local favorite – Black Seabass!

June

Early summer proudly introduces the world-famous prized catch – Bluefin Tuna! This admirable fish is quite a challenge to pull out of the water due to its size, and is widely sought-after thanks to its delicious meat. If you’re a fan of both, now’s your chance to go after them.

July

Summer is here and headliners are thriving. The waters are brimming with Flounder, Wahoo, Amberjack, Black Seabass, Bluefin Tuna, and Spotted Seatrout. However, the absolute winner in the picture-perfect category is Mahi Mahi and their season is blooming.

August

Mahi Mahi travel in schools and warm temperatures bring them in packs. They’re mostly located by trolling. While easy to spot, don’t expect an easy way out as they’ll put up a strong fight. Good-looking, feisty and tasty, Mahi Mahi are worth the hype.

September

Mahi Mahi, Flounder, Amberjack, and Spotted Seatrout are still at their peak, but soon they’ll clear the way for the other species. Early fall might be your last chance to make some good fishing memories while chasing after big names like Blue and White Marlin.

October

The right temperature caters to the needs of many species and waters are still abundant with fish. Wherever you cast your line, you can expect to catch something, but Black Seabass will stand out. For the next few weeks, they’ll take over these waters.

November

Winter brings new excitement, but old names, too. While Black Seabass and Tautog are dominating the area, Sharks and Crabs are making a comeback. Passionate Striped Bass anglers will also be pleased to see their favorite bouncing back.

December

Ocean City fishing season is slowly toning down. But this doesn’t mean you’ll be left hanging. Striped Bass and Black Seabass are at their finest and under no circumstances are you to miss out on them!
