Fishing in Montauk

Welcome to Montauk, New York, a premier saltwater fishing destination at the easternmost tip of Long Island. Known as "The End," Montauk offers unparalleled access to the Atlantic Ocean, where powerful currents, deep offshore canyons, and diverse marine ecosystems create legendary angling opportunities. This iconic location provides a 20-mile head start into blue water, making it a hotspot for trophy species and record-setting catches.

Montauk is celebrated for its exceptional shark fishing, with acrobatic Mako Sharks, massive Blue Sharks, and powerful Threshers patrolling the depths. Bluefin, Yellowfin, and Albacore Tuna migrate past these shores, offering heart-pounding battles for offshore enthusiasts. Inshore, the fall run of False Albacore ("Albies") delivers explosive light-tackle action, while Striped Bass and Bluefish provide year-round surf and nearshore excitement. The area holds more saltwater fishing records than any other port globally, a testament to its unmatched productivity.

From fly-fishing for blitzing Albies against the backdrop of the historic Montauk Lighthouse to battling giant Tuna offshore, Montauk fishing charters cater to all skill levels and preferences. With seasons extending from spring striped bass to late-fall tuna migrations, every trip promises unforgettable moments in one of the world's great sportfishing capitals.

Montauk Fishing Seasons

January

Montauk is primarily a summertime destination for tourists, and with good reason. In January, the weather is cold, wet, and windy. You can catch some nice Codfish, though.

February

While the weather remains grim, the Cod season picks up. These fish make for some fine eating! Bear in mind many of the shops and hotels will be closed at this time of year.

March

With most of the town still in hibernation, Montauk is far from at its busiest in March. But what it may lack in buzz it makes up for in natural beauty, which you can have more or less to yourself.

April

The main tourist season is yet to start, but the action under the water will mean any die-hard angler will be rushing out to beat the crowds. This is the start of Striper season!

May

Memorial Day sees the crowds flocking in to Montauk, and this is when most Montauk fishing charters will start working on their summer schedule. Bring layers - the spring weather is changeable!

June

Montauk’s world famous Shark season kicks off, and there are a battering of tournaments to prove it. Don’t miss the Annual Star Island Shark Tournament and the Annual Montauk Marine Basin Shark Tournament.

July

Joining the Sharks come the Tuna, making this the start of the offshore fishing season. If your sights are set on a Bluefin, you will be looking at an overnight charter, at least. Inshore, things are just as exciting.

August

August and September mean one thing in Montauk: peak offshore fishing season and plenty of tourists around, too. Don’t miss hooking up on a predator at the Annual Star Island Mako/Thresher Tournament.

September

As some of the crowds die down, the action inshore heats up. This is prime time for another of Montauk’s specialities: surf fishing for Stripers. Don’t miss the Montauk Surf Classic!

October

Settle down after a long day on the water to a nice hot bowl of clam chowder. There’s even a festival to prove the best variety! Meanwhile, anglers will be focusing on winning the Star Island Striped Bass Tournament.

November

By November, the offshore pelagics have generally moved on, with the action now staying steadily closer to home. Make the most of the open season for Blackfish (Tautog) and keep chasing those Stripers!

December

Come to Montauk in December, and you’ll find the majority of people hibernating. But a brave few remain on the water, and they will be making the most of the reduced fishing pressure and great Cod bite.
