Fishing in Newport

Want to explore the Beaver State’s exceptional coastal angling opportunities? Simply hop aboard one of the many Newport, OR fishing charters on offer. This city is perfectly positioned along the state’s central coastline, and boasts access to Yaquina Bay and the Pacific Ocean. This means you’ll have some world-famous species at your disposal!

The Yaquina Bay is the jewel in Newport’s crown, and for good reason. It’s home to an enviable population of delicious Dungeness Crab virtually all year round, although June through November are the peak months. Lingcod, Rockfish, and Chinook Salmon also inhabit the inshore waters of this bay, as well as Herring and Shoreperch. If you’re a newer angler or want to take your little ones fishing, a quick half day trip around the bay is the perfect option. But longer trips are available, too!

Beyond the bay lies the mighty Pacific Ocean. Deep sea fishing is extremely popular in Newport, and this is where you’ll be able to try it out. Huge Halibut are the main attraction, but you’ll also hook into Lingcod, Rockfish, and Albacore Tuna. If you’re looking to target nearshore Halibut, a full day eight-hour trip will get you there. Ten-hour trips are common for anglers who want to explore this area’s full bottom fishing potential and land huge Halibut!

You’ll find local charter captains dotted all around Newport, so it’s best to focus your attention on where you want to fish. Many captains begin their adventures around the Yaquina Bay, and you’ll find ‘em located around the point where the bay meets the open ocean.

Rules & Regulations

Any angler age 12 or over needs a valid fishing license to cast a line in Newport. Some species, such as Dungeness Crab, are subject to size limits, and your captain will be able to tell you more about this.

Newport Fishing Seasons

January

You can expect plenty of rain at the start of the year, but don’t let that put a damper on your plans! Wait for a break in the downpour and bring home tasty Crab or Lingcod.

February

February is a great time to cast a line from shore. Herring and Surfperch are spawning in the bay, and there’s also a chance to catch a few Crabs if you look in the right place.

March

The first of the migratory Salmon are appearing, and the action offshore will be heating up soon. You can still expect rainfall for about half of the month.

April

The spring Salmon run is underway, making this a great time fish for Chinook. Crabbing is available, although it isn't at its height this month, but you can expect great Rockfishing as usual.

May

Halibut season usually opens in May, just as the rain begins to subside and average temperatures rise toward 60°F. Book a full day charter and sail outside of the bay for excellent bottom fishing opportunities!

June

If it swims in Newport, it’s biting! You can catch almost anything in June, from Rockfish, Halibut, Salmon, and Crab to Sturgeon. Explore the coastline or head out onto deeper waters for some huge fish.

July

Average temperatures in Newport range from 54° to 61°F in July, and the skies are mostly sunny. Good thing, too, because it’s time to head offshore for some Albacore Tuna!

August

The Albacore Tuna season continues in August, so don’t miss your chance to experience some of the best light tackle action Newport has to offer. Inshore, you never know what you’re about to reel in next!

September

Most species are still at their peak in September, from Salmon and Trout to Halibut. Most of the fish in Newport make for great sport and good eating, so cast away!

October

The Albacore season will be ending soon, so be sure to catch a boat ride offshore if you haven’t yet. Crabbing is at its peak, but make sure you check with your guide to see if you're allowed to catch Dungeness offshore.

November

Come November, many anglers return to Yaquina Bay to make the most of the peak seasons for Crab and Rockfish. In the river, Salmon and Steelhead are putting up a mean fight.

December

December is a great time to cast your line in the Yaquina River for Steelhead, or see what kind of luck you can have while crabbing and fishing from shore!
