Frequently Asked Questions about Fishing Charters in Riviera Maya
Fishing in Riviera Maya
Mexico’s Riviera Maya is a land of ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, and fish-filled waters. Travel the length of this coastline and you’ll discover anything from bustling tourist hotspots to remote islands. Something that doesn’t change, however, is the excellent fishing action on offer. Just hop aboard one of the many Riviera Maya fishing charters to begin your adventure!
If it’s inshore fishing you’re after, make your way to Isla Mujeres and Isla Blanca, where you’ll find Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook. Then there’s Ascension Bay, which is brimming with these species as well as Jack Crevalle and Barracuda. With trips lasting anywhere from 4–8 hours, a shorter adventure is the perfect introduction for newbies and families. Seasoned fishing enthusiasts should opt for a full day to test their skills!
Riviera Maya is home to the majestic Mesoamerican Reef, where you’ll encounter Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, Hogfish, and Barracuda. Mix up a short trip with some snorkeling, or fill the cooler on a full day. Then there’s the incredible deep sea action on offer – Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna inhabit waters only a few miles from shore. Although it’s possible to battle these beasts on a half day trip, a full day adventure allows for more action.
For inshore fishing, head to Cancun to explore Islas Mujeres and Blanca. Tulum is your “go-to” place for Ascension Bay. The island of Cozumel will see you dropping lines around the reef just a mile from shore, and Playa del Carmen could see you hooking a Marlin in less than four hours. These locations are dotted with plenty of charter captains, too!
You’ll need a valid Mexico fishing license to explore Riviera Maya’s many fisheries. Cast off alongside a local captain, and this will generally be covered for you.
