Fishing in Finger Lakes

It’s no wonder that the Finger Lakes are a favorite destination for New York anglers. Consisting of 11 glacially formed bodies of water, as well countless surrounding rivers, streams, and ponds, this unique spot is home to a variety of fish species. Head out on a Finger Lakes fishing trip and cross this dream destination off your bucket list!

The Finger Lakes are considered both coldwater and warmwater fisheries. As such, you’ll be able to target different fish in different lakes. The coldwater lakes are a hotspot for Lake Trout, as well as Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout. The warm water lakes are considered some of the best for Bass fishing in New York. Target Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, as well Walleye, Pike, and Yellow Perch.

Choosing the right trip will depend on your goals. If you’re looking to explore just one of the lakes, a half day trip can put you on a few different fish. If you have a specific target in mind or you’d like to dip your rod into more than one lake, a full day trip is a better choice. Fishing the Finger Lakes is a year-round activity so if you’re here in the winter, try out ice fishing!

After you’ve decided what fish you’d like to target, deciding where to look for a charter becomes much easier. For incredible Trout and Salmon fishing, head to the Skaneateles, Owasco, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Canadice and Hemlock Lakes. For Bass and other warm water fish, try the Cayuga, Otisco, Conesus and Honeoye Lakes.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers over the age of 16 are required to purchase a New York fishing license. The 11 lakes are subject to differing open seasons, possession, and size limits. To ensure you’re fishing within the law, head out with a reputable guide.

Finger Lakes Fishing Seasons

January

If you’re willing to brave the cold, head out for some ice fishing! Otisco Lake has great Tiger Muskie fishing. Owasco, Skaneateles, Canadice, and Keuka Lake are where you want to be for Trout.

February

It’s all about ice fishing for Walleye this month. Walleye are shy, even in the winter, so wait until low light before heading to Cayuta Lake to get in on the action.

March

Smelt start making their run at the beginning of the month so grab a net and dip for limits. You can also target Crappie, Yellow Perch, and Trout.

April

Spring has sprung and Trout mania has taken over the Finger Lakes! Take advantage of the incredible Lake Trout fishing onoffer or mix it up by targeting Browns and Rainbows.

May

Walleye and Northern Pike fishing opens up again on the first Saturday of May. If you came to the lakes to get in on the incredible Trout and Salmon action, this is a great time to head to Cayuga or Seneca Lake.

June

Bass fishing finally kicks off in the second half of the month. This momentous occasion is marked by the annual Fishing Derby on Lake Otisco, drawing in anglers from all over.

July

In the summer, it’s all about proving why the Finger Lakes are considered the best Bass fishery in New York. Head to warm water lakes like Owasco, Otisco, and Honeoye Lakes.

August

It’s high season on the Finger Lakes. The weather is beautiful and the fish are bountiful. Go after anything from Trout to Bass, Walleye, and Yellow Perch.

September

Things start to quiet down after Labor Day, as vacationers make their way back home. There’s still great fishing to be had, however. Get in on the Bass and Trout action while you still can!

October

Some say this is the best time to visit the Finger Lakes. Not only is the fishing fantastic, but the fall foliage will take your breath away! It's also your last chance to get your hands on Bass before the season closes.

November

Bass fishing season may have ended, but we still have those coldwater fish to look forward to. Keep hooking Trout, Crappie, and Yellow Perch.

December

If it’s been cold enough, some of the shallower Finger Lakes may have frozen over. In that case, indulge in some ice fishing for Trout.
