Top fishing charters in Western Cape

Western Cape charters focus on ocean trips targeting species like Yellowtail Amberjack and Yellowfin Tuna, with many boats also going out when tuna are jumping and keeping the action going with constant searching rather than waiting in one spot. Look for a charter with local spot knowledge and gear/tackle sorted on board, plus crew that adapts to mixed experience levels (including kids and first-timers) so you still get plenty of chances to hook up. If your goal is Tuna or Yellowtail Amberjack, book a charter that’s willing to reposition through changing conditions and can organize everything from lines to bait to filleting, so you leave with fish ready to cook.

    Perfekt time

Serious fishing at the Cape: The crew—Donavan and Mike, both true-blue South Africans—are professional tuna hunters. You sense this the moment you step onto their fishing machines. We aren't exactly novices when it comes to fishing in Europe, but we realized immediately that the fishing experience with this crew is in a league of its own. It was only when we first headed out that we truly grasped the fantastic marine world we were entering; the area teems with wildlife, from fish to whales. And whenever these animals are in the bay or near the coast, these two specialists know exactly where to find them. They are consummate professionals—no gimmicks, just the real deal. Even the boat ride itself, without the fishing, was magnificent. We enjoyed perfect weather in September; there were three of us plus the crew on what we would call a 28-foot big-game fishing boat. We tried both trolling and reef fishing, catching about eight fish. We were accompanied by dolphins, very large sharks, and countless seals. Occasionally, tell-tale bubbles and small fins betrayed the presence of yellowfin tuna; even the crew would get excited, and the thrill of the hunt was palpable. The price was very fair for the experience. Thank you, Donavan and Mike, for your time, your professional expertise, and your genuine, friendly nature. My son will be in touch with you at the start of the tuna season; I hope you have a spot for him. Best regards, Thomas, Isabella, and Philipp.

More Than Just Fishing – An Incredible Day at Sea!

What an incredible experience with Ocean Life Charters! A huge thank you to Donovan and Mickey for making it such a memorable family day. The fishing was great, but honestly, the entire experience was so much more than that. We were lucky enough to see whales, dolphins, and seals in their natural habitat, which made the trip absolutely unforgettable. We also caught some beautiful fish, tagged them, and released them back into the ocean, something we really appreciated as it reflects their respect for marine conservation. Donovan and Mickey were friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and made everyone feel welcome from start to finish. They went above and beyond to ensure we had an amazing time. Thank you for a perfect family day out. We made memories we’ll treasure for years to come, and we’ll definitely be back!

January is a prime time for Yellowtail Amberjack in the Western Cape, with many local charters on the water chasing this fast fighter, especially in December too. Yellowfin Tuna bites best in March and April, while Snoek is a standout in August and April. Skipjack Tuna is on the menu in January and February, and Kob heats up in December and January.

    (Half Day Beach Trip)

Amazing trip from start to finish!

We had an absolutely brilliant fishing trip with Matthew in South Africa. He went above and beyond from the start—getting out early to catch fresh bait and even showing us how it’s done, which made the whole experience feel hands-on right away. We then headed to a stunning beach location where we managed to land a kob, and also hooked an amazing 5 to 6ft bronze whaler shark—unfortunately we lost it, but the adrenaline was unreal! Not long after, we hooked and successfully landed another shark, which made the trip even more memorable. Matthew is incredibly knowledgeable, clearly passionate about fishing, and made the whole experience enjoyable from start to finish. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does, and that makes a massive difference. 10/10 trip—would 100% recommend and we’ll definitely be back to book with Matthew again!

    Incredible Fishing Day

Arranged a 10 hour Tuna Charter several weeks ago and had to change day due to weather conditions.it was quite a long journey out to where the Tuna were but more than worth it as we caught 5 large yellow fin tuna in the afternoon. They have great equipment including stand up harnesses.. Donovan, the Captain,is an experienced fisherman but great fun to fish with. The mate Andre was equally friendly and helpful with lots of interesting fishing tales. Overall a great experience and I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to catch yellow fin or indeed an inshore trip maybe for the family.

The fish you can target

Western Cape’s hottest offshore action lines up with the summer run, and January through February is when Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish and Marlin are most dependable. The bite stays strong into March and April for Yellowfin Tuna, while winter shifts the spotlight toward Bluefin Tuna and Snoek instead.

Kob fishing is in season in October in the Western Cape, and anglers target it for its hard fighting and excellent table qualities. Snoek, Yellowfin Tuna, Leerfish (Garrick), and Geelbek (Cape Salmon) are also being actively targeted this month, each putting up a strong fight and rewarding anglers who match the bait and the local water.

Families heading out for deep-sea fishing in the Western Cape often say the crews are helpful with bait and fish handling, which makes a first trip feel more manageable. Several reviewers mention that kids and first-timers can still get into the action, with successful catches during half-day trips, and some report kids reeling in Snoek.

Western Cape trips can range from windy inshore days to longer runs offshore or along the coast, so pack for changing weather and a lot of sun on the water. A light windbreaker, layered clothing, and something to cover your face or neck are smart choices, especially when the southwesterly breeze kicks up. Nearly all local charters in Western Cape provide fishing gear, and the large majority provide bait and lures, so you usually only need to bring personal essentials and anything that makes a long day more comfortable. If you are prone to motion sickness, it is worth packing medicine, since some Western Cape trips head out beyond sheltered water and can get lively.

Most of the local charters in Western Cape run trolling and deep sea fishing trips. More than half also offer jigging and bottom fishing.

Fishing in Western Cape

Experience world-class angling adventures with Western Cape fishing charters, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet to create one of the most diverse fishing grounds on the planet. The Western Cape region of South Africa offers exceptional year-round fishing opportunities that attract anglers from across the globe.

The waters off Cape Town and surrounding areas are famous for their impressive Yellowfin Tuna populations, with specimens reaching up to 110kg. When the Sardine run begins toward Mozambique, predatory Tuna follow close behind, creating prime fishing conditions. Experienced captains will take you 20-50 miles offshore where trolling and live bait fishing prove most effective for landing these powerful fighters.

Beyond Tuna, Western Cape fishing charters target a variety of prized species including Yellowtail, ferocious Snoek, Longfin Tuna, and occasionally Black and Striped Marlin. Inshore fishing near Cape Point yields excellent catches of Yellowtail, Snoek and Katonkel, while reef fishing produces Red Roman, Geelbek (Cape Salmon), and various Snapper species.

The region offers diverse fishing styles to suit all preferences - from offshore deep sea adventures to inshore excursions, reef fishing, and even freshwater options in the area's numerous lakes, dams, and rivers. Both beginners and seasoned anglers will find suitable trips with professional captains who possess decades of local fishing knowledge.

Most Western Cape fishing charters operate from prime locations like Simon's Town in False Bay, just a short 30-minute ride from the legendary Cape Point - the southwesternmost tip of Africa. The calmer waters of False Bay provide easier access to productive fishing grounds, making the Western Cape an ideal destination for your next fishing adventure.

As a seasoned water user I would recommend taking a sea sickness tablet and having some food in your stomach before you board the fishing boat first thing in the morning. I targeted the fishing date as the forecast was calm, 30miles + offshore the seas can be bumpy and you can get queezy regardless of how tough you feel before hand, just a little mitigation to avoid spoiling such a magical experience.

    Fun and productive trip

Captain and mate were friendly and professional, boat and tackle were solid. Our group included a novice and a small kid, which can be tricky, but the crew made sure we all had a great experience. We fished the bottom offshore and had consistent action the whole time— mostly roman and other sea bream. Spent some time after that looking for bonito to cast at, but no luck today.

    trophy fish for everyone

myself and 3 teens reeled in some really lovely yellowtail. Our captain and skipper Mickey and Jason were amazing. They handled my ferril teenagers with ease. I highly recommend this trip. In fairness they did say our weather was pretty perfect.

    Great tour with exrta sightings

Donavan and Micky made the tour very special to us. Not even that they brought us several fish to the hook. Even a bigger fight came up. Unfortunatly we lost the big fish. But Donavan managed to show us additional marine wildlife and explained a lot about the species, the landscape and South Africa in general.
