Crab fishing in Canada offers a tasty reward and a fun day on the water. Canada’s long, cold coasts grow meaty Crabs, with Dungeness Crab on the Pacific and Snow Crab in Atlantic waters. Many anglers come for simple gear, steady action, and a great meal at the end.
You can target Crab from docks, piers, beaches, or small boats. Most trips use crab traps called pots, or hoop nets that sit on the bottom. Crew will bait traps with oily fish or chicken, drop them on sandy or muddy flats, and return after a soak. Hand lines also work in sheltered spots. Your captain will show you how to set, mark, and pull gear safely.
A typical charter keeps things easy for first-timers and families. Guides supply traps, bait, and safety gear. They watch tides and weather, move to new depths if needed, and sort the catch. Wear warm layers and non-slip boots. Bring a small cooler, gloves, and a Crab gauge to measure legal size. Expect steady checks of the pots, quick lessons, and a hands-on role in every step.
Top places include British Columbia’s coast, Vancouver Island, and the Gulf Islands for Dungeness Crab. On the Atlantic side, look to Newfoundland and Labrador, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and sheltered bays in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Protected inshore waters and easy access make many areas ideal for beginners.
Rules vary by province and species. Before you go, check local fishing license and permit needs. Review open seasons, gear rules, and harvest limits for the area you will fish. Your captain can help explain current regulations and safe handling so you only keep legal Crab.
What anglers said about Crab Fishing in Canada
- 5.0/5(5 Hour Trip – Morning Salmon)
Amazing Trip!
Had a great time fishing with Adam today. We caught around 10 or so wild Coho Salmon, 2 mackarel, and 2 keeper stocked Cohos. We were also able to catch a handful of Dungeness crabs and got a keeper size to take home. We had an amazing time during our first time here in BC. We are looking forward to coming back in the future!

3 Hour Sunset bite from Nanaimo
The group landed a 22 and 21 pound Chinooks. Released 2 under sized Chinooks a hatchery Coho with bonus of a couple of crabs. Brannen did a great job getting us on the fish and made the trip great.

Gtreat trip
Our trip was all we could have wanted and then some. Brennan knows his stuff. We caught lots of fish and even went home with some crab too. I would use Getter Done again. 100%

Great morning on the water!
Captain Luke took great care of us, and hooked us up with 10 Salmon, and even a trap full of crabs! My friends and I will definitely book a charter with him again, can't wait for next time!

Thanks Captain Shane!
Great morning on the water with Captain Shane. The coho and chinook were biting and definitely a lucky day with even a double-header! Topped it off with a bunch of crabs which we kept a couple Dungeness and a Red Rock to steam for dinner. Captain Shane was great, moving us between spots and testing mid-depth, then moving to deeper for us to find the Chinook. Great chatting with him and learning about the area and all the animals and fish in the area. Thanks!
