Chinook Salmon Fishing in Columbia River

The Columbia River’s Salmon fishing opportunities have long held legendary status. This fishery boasts three separate Salmon runs and two varieties of Salmon. It’s easy to see why casting a line here has captured the hearts of freshwater fishing fanatics all across the US. Want to experience it for yourself? All you need to do is set sail with one of the many Columbia River Salmon fishing guides dotted along this waterway!

The Columbia River is home to two varieties of Salmon – the mighty Chinook and the feisty Coho. The fishing season usually starts sometime in March, when Chinook kick off the river’s first Salmon run of the year. Summer Chinook arrive in June, which is when you’ll find huge “June Hogs” – species weighing around 50 pounds! August sees the fall Chinook Salmon run take place, and they’re soon joined by Coho, with strong fishing lasting throughout the fall.

A half day excursion is the perfect introduction to Columbia River Salmon fishing for newbies, especially during spring, when you’ll be able to hook perfect eating-size Chinook. If you’re a more experienced angler wanting a trophy, a full day trip during summer or fall will let you chase multiple Coho and Chinook hookups.

As the Columbia River flows for a whopping 1,200+ miles through Oregon and Washington, there are plenty of departure spots to choose from. Portland, OR, Astoria, OR, and Vancouver, WA, are popular locations, but you’ll find local charter guides posted up all along the river’s banks.

Awesome Day with Captain Herman
5/5
Beautiful day fishing off the coast near Astoria, OR. Caught 6 native Coho Salmon and one hatchery Chinook Salmon that was 25 lbs. and 37". Chinook was a fighter and Capt. Herman coached me the entire time to ensure we got it into the boat. Capt. Herman is friendly, knowledgeable, patient and easy to fish with. Fantastic day!
