Swordfish fishing in New Zealand is a true bluewater challenge. Broadbill Swordfish cruise deep offshore waters around the country. Anglers come for powerful fights, trophy potential, and a wild, scenic setting.

Captains target Swordfish with deep dropping, which means sending baits far below the surface using heavy weights. Many trips fish at night when Swordfish rise higher and feed. Crews use sturdy tackle, abrasion‑resistant leaders, and squid or similar baits. Glow lights and careful drift fishing help keep baits in the strike zone.

Expect an offshore run to canyon edges, seamounts, or steep drop-offs. Full-day and overnight trips are common because one quality bite can take time. This is great for anglers who enjoy patience, teamwork, and big-game excitement. First-timers are welcome, as crews walk you through every step. Bring warm layers, a hat, sunscreen, and soft-soled shoes. Pack snacks and motion sickness medicine if needed. Most charters provide rods, reels, bait, and safety gear.

New Zealand offers broad Swordfish grounds around the Northland and Bay of Islands, the Bay of Plenty, and the East Cape canyons. Productive waters also lie off Hawke Bay and the Wairarapa slopes. In the South Island, windows can open off the West Coast and remote Fiordland. Your captain will choose the safest, most promising area for the day.

Before your trip, check local rules on licenses or permits, seasons, and harvest. Regulations can change, and exact details vary by area. Many crews support tagging and releasing Swordfish. Your captain will explain current rules and best practices on board.

(Half Day Trip – Snapper (Private))

    Exceptional half day of fishing!

Capt Paul was easy going and so knowledgeable. Boat has plenty of room for our party to all fish🐟 on deck. Caught snapper and kings and he dressed them for us. Ate them for supper at the Swordfish bistro near the dock. Doesn't get fresher than that! Thanks Paul for a great day of fishing!
