Offshore Fishing in Islamorada

Islamorada offshore fishing is spectacular. These fisheries are the capital of sport fishing for a good reason, and whether you’re a rookie angler or a hardcore seasoned fisherman, you will have a blast on an average day of fishing.

What you can get offshore

Well, the list is pretty long, so don’t say we didn’t warn ya! Islamorada offshore is a relative term, really, as this little piece of fishing heaven lies just a few miles away from the gulf stream. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the one side, and facing the Gulf waters on the other, Islamorada offshore is home to Blue Marlin, Blackfin Tuna, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, and many more. Fishing trips that target these fellas would convert any not-so-outdoorsy person into a wanna-be fisherman after a half day trip, you can bet on that.

The Islamorada Hump is a famed offshore location. Many reports include mentions of Sailfish, Sharks, and monster Amberjacks, as well as Wahoo. Once you reach these fisheries, you can try trolling, jigging, kite fishing, or bottom fishing for tasty tablefare. Some charters may even offer spearfishing, so if you’re feeling like taking a more niche approach, that’s your chance.

When to come fishing in Islamorada

As to when, Islamorada offshore fishing charters come back with a solid catch year round. It might sound corny, but that’s how it is. When the spring kicks in, offshore fishing charters can even get a Marlin, and as the water heats up, so does the action. You will be seeing Mahi Mahi and Wahoo, and in the winter time, it’s Tuna, Sailfish, and Kingfish all over the place.

Islamorada offshore fishing charters operate year round, luckily enough for anglers. But, Islamorada offshore is not only about pelagics. During the spring, the offshore reefs can present you with some tasty Yellowtail and Mutton Snapper, while Grouper come as the main course during summer.

1/2 day trip to start. Depending on time of year, the sun can be pretty intense. UV protective clothing from top of head to feet. Chasing fish in Keys can be intense.

If going for dolphin (which I highly recommend), do so in late summer or early September.

Get sea sick patches from the doctor just in case (put them on the night before) and trust the crew they do this every day and donโ€™t want you to be left empty-handed. You have to take what the ocean gives you.

Good fly casting is key. Be able to double haul well. Plenty of fish there but they are highly pressured. You will see lots fish. Whether or not you connect with them might be a different story.

Make sure you know the seasons of what fish you really want to catch. The sailfish are January-April, and mahi/tuna are June-September. So I missed both but the yellowtail snapper is what we caught and they were delicious.

Just do it, if you have the dates available. Mahi is still slow if you can wait until May it's better. Snapper is good.

Have an idea of what fish you want to target and share this with your captain ahead of time. He can help you determine which boat and duration of the trip that best suits your needs.

If you are a first-timer with charter fishing or a particular boat. Communicate with the captain before hand so you know what kind of space is available on the boat. Take just what you need for the charter.

Yes certainly, I understand that is was a little early for Tarpon fishing as they hadn't migrated from the Bahamas yet. So will be back in the summer to try again hopefully.
