Background
As a Hawaiiian born and son of a fisherman I had a rod in my hand from my earliest memories. I fished with my father around the world including the Indian Ocean,Hawaii, Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Siam, West Coast USA. As I became older the attraction of fishing in Cabo San Lucas became my dream, I started in the fleet in 1983, moved to the Cape and never looked back. Its been 34 years of hardcore fishing thruout the Baja Peninsula, Sea of Cortez, and the west coast of mainland Mexico Life is good and we are out again tomorrow!
Techniques
We fish many different techniques onboard Picudo. It varies with the time of year and the fish we are chasing. We are big fans of pulling dead baits, teasers, daisy chains, as well as lures, and always have a fresh bait in the tank ready to pitch! We fish biggame offshore and smallgame light tackle inshore. We spcialize in kids fishing, there's nothing better than getting the little buddies hooked for life. We welcome novice fisherman and are eager to teach and share our knowledge.

It was a blustery day off the Cape with the northwesterlies howling down the Pacific side. The 1st low pressure was rolling thru and we had 20 knots blowing with 6foot sea whompin us. We decided to fish inshore as we had 3 lil guys onboard and conditions would have turned them green in no time! So we swung inside the Sea of Cortez to the calmer water and began to troll the lightweight setups on the 20 fathom curve. With a mixed bag pattern consisting of feathers, Rapalas and hoochies it wasn't long before we got the Skippies up and biting. It was a good time as the lil guys got to tug and land some fish. We then decided to move it out towards the 95 Fathom area and try for a Marlin but after 3 hours of pounding the area we opted to head back in towards Faro Viejo and try for the Roosters. We pulled into some shallow 20 -30 foot water with a nice sandy bottom scattered with rock reef formations all down the beach. So out went the ultralight setups with some small live bait Caballitos swimming in the wake. We proceeded to zig zag slow troll it down the beach trying to raise a Rooster or maybe a Sierra. The lil buddies were having a blast as they had rods in their hands, and it wasnt long before the reels started singing! But back came our bait with the eyeballs bit out....that means only one thing - the Triggerfish are here thick!! Top deckhand Poli was quick on getting the red squid out and rigged, and with a quick switch of bait we were on it! The Triggers were voracious and the bite was on! Every troll down the beach produced bites and the kids were screaming away!! We landed a few and finished up our day on a good note. Sometimes its more fun to escape a beating and go for the sure thing, and today was just that! With the Winter season coming on quick and sea temps dropping we will be fishing inshore alot more! Time to put a sweater on! Gotta love it!!

Big ones got away!!

Its was a slow pick as we headed up the Pacific side. The conditons were perfect with 84 degree water, 90 degrees air temp amd flat calm seas.We were tacking close to the beach between 50 and 200 feet trying to get the early a.m. Dorado bite but those golden grabbers sure were fickle. We had the 30 lb. setups out with feathers and sewed bait in the pattern and finally the reels sreamed. It was a double hhok up! Our angler was on it and at the same time deckie Marcos pitched a live bait back and HOOK UP! It was a triple header with those fish jumping and fighting for their lives. We lost one and got our dinner fish in the bag when Marcos pitched amother bait and hooked up again! We had that school right under the boat. Our anglers were on it and we got the other fish in in no time! We pitched some more baits but the school had boogied. We trolled up past Migriรฑo and only raised a couple more so we decided to swing it out for the big game. We swapped out the tackle and got the 80s going with a nice Blue Marlin lure spread going off the transom. We managed to raise 2 Striped Marlin but couldnt get them to go. Big hooks were the issue but we had big Blues on our mind and thats the way it goes. As they say in Cabo "Ni modo" which means " Too bad !". So it was off to finish the day slow trolling rapalas and hoochies back down the beach. We broke out the 20 lb. gear and had quite a few bites but only managed a triggerfish and a small eyed jack. The fishing has slowed a bit inshore but it should pick back up. Hurricane Seymour is going to miss us so its going to be a great Oct! Im out again tomorrow so we'll see if things improve! Adios from Cabo, Palomilla!! Yar !

Billfish Biting Bigtime

The northwest winds finally gave us a break and the fishing was fantastic! We started the day with a nice Dorado and following my clients request we headed offshore for big game! We put out the heavy gear and proceeded to troll up the line towards the Los Arcos area. We were well after the tide and despite perfect conditions and ample bait showing we couldnt raise a fish. I decided to move inside to the **hidden content** feet area just offshore and troll sewed baits. This worked well as we raised a couple of Striped Marlin and caught and released one. A quick troll downhill to the Pedregalito area produced another Dorado. So with ample dinner filets in the bag we geared back up for the big stuff and swung it back outside! We were tacking downhill working the El Molino area about 3 miles out when this Blue came crashing into the pattern. She was all over the short flat Petrolero and reaking havoc on anything in sight! Deckie Marcos grabbed the 40 lb. Set up and pitched a live bait bait caballito into the pattern. The fish lit on that delicious treat and it was "Hook-up!". John was up and in the chair and did a fantastic job. That fish went balistic and put on quite a jumping show like only the Blue Marlin can do! We had it to the boat and released it in 31 minutes. It was around 220 lbs. and that put angler John into the 5-1 Club for his great catch and release on 40 lb. test line! It was another memorable day onboard Picudo! This bite shows no signs of slowing! Gotta love Fall fishing at the Cape!!

Pacific Side busts open at the Cape
Pacific Side busts open at the Cape

It was blowing pretty good as we busted water up to the grounds past Los Arcos. The water was cobalt blue and 84 degrees and bait was thick on the meter. We could see bait breaking as we slowed to trolling speed and put the 30 lb. set ups out. It didnt take long for the 1st Dorado to hit and Sarah made quick business of that one With a mixes combo of feathers, ballyhoo, and small lures in the pattern it didnt take us long to limit out on Dorado. I dont think we trolled more than 8 miles in total. The Skippies were so thick we were stopping all thhe time,, and after limiting out on the Dorado we headed out to the Marlin grounds. We swapped out the rods and got the big guns out ready to have at it and we hadnt made it out past the drop off when the short flat was smoked by a Big Blue. We didnt get a good look at the bite but when she cleared water we knew it was big time! She jumped and blew water everywhere!! Massive violence was occuring as she shredded water and couldnt get her 700 plus pounds out of the water! We just had gotten our angler in the chair when the line went slack... dumped it...broke the line... We retrieved the line and could see where she had jumped and landed on the 100 lb. test P-Line. We were massively bummed, we had new knots, new 100lb. test line, an 18 foot 400lb test leader. new hooks and a beautiful softhead blue and white lure with a pink inside skirt.....hey, prep all you want cause when big mama nails you she owns you for the 1st few minutes! She whupped us this time but we will be back. A beautiful fish for sure! We wiped off the dust and continued our day. We had caught 2 Striped Marlin by the time it was over. All in all it was a great day out and the fishing was excelent. But I still cant get that fish out of my mind, you only get a couple of shots at those fatties every season and it is haunting. Thats part of being a fisherman I guess, thats what keeps us coming back , Wont sleep well tonight. Maybe maรฑana.......
