We had an amazing time with Reel Escapes, Hawaii. The staff we super friendly and the boat was so nice! We started the day with a safety briefing and learned what we would be fishing for. What was really remarkable was that you start fishing almost immediately after you leave the harbour.
I had no idea we would be so close to shore. The 1st mate took time to show us all the equipment, what would happen when a fish hit the line and then what our job would be as anglers. It took a little time but we got hooked up to a blue marlin!! So much excitement, it is hard to actually describe the energy when you hook up to such a big fish. The captain and 1st mate again were so helpful and we got the fish to the side of the boat for photos and videos. We ended up catching two more fish but I forgot what they were called.
They filleted it for us though and we were able to take it to a local restaurant for an awesome meal!!
I loved the Big Island before but this experience makes us want to come back to Kona over and over again. This charter was the highlight of our vacation and we can’t wait to do it again. If you are on the fence, get off it and book!!

What an unforgettable adventure! We booked a fishing charter with Reel Escapes aboard the A’u Nui, and from start to finish, it was an amazing experience. The staff was incredibly helpful and took the time to answer all of our questions, making the booking process smooth and easy.

The boat was spacious, extremely clean, and honestly, I wish it was mine! It made the entire day feel even more comfortable and enjoyable. We kicked off the trip with a spectacular sighting of humpback whales just outside the harbor, setting the tone for an epic day ahead. Throughout the day, we were treated to playful dolphins and even encountered a pod of pilot whales right next to the boat!

The highlight? Catching a blue marlin—I’ve been dreaming of that moment my whole life! The crew was incredibly supportive and guided us through every step of reeling it in, making the seemingly daunting task easy! We also hooked a mahi mahi, which we brought to a local restaurant to cook it up for a delicious dinner.

Our whole family had an amazing time with the crew from Reel Escapes. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and just so good with our whole family. The boat was immaculate and looked as beautiful as it did online. When we arrived at the boat, they welcomed us with a safety briefing and got us safely prepared for the departure. Then once leaving the harbor they put out the fishing lines right away. After the lines were out, they went through the whole process of what would happen when a fish bit the line. We practiced sitting in the chair, how we were to fight the fish, everything. It was a lot to remember but they assured us they would be helping the entire time. When we did catch, they were AWESOME. It was such a cool experience to catch such HUGE fish. The pictures, videos, everything was worth every penny and more for this. In the end we caught 2 blue marlin and 2 mahi mahi. They cut up the smaller fish and let the bigger ones go but we went back to our VRBO with enough fish for several meals. Some of it we cooked ourselves, the rest we took to a restaurant that they recommended. Great job guys and we will definitely see you all again. Mahalo 🙂

Our experience was nothing short of amazing.

We began our day with a 6:30 am fishing charter with Reel Escapes, and from the moment we contacted the owner to book, everything went smoothly. The owner was so kind and took the time to answer all of our questions, which made the booking process feel effortless.

We were lucky enough to see humpback whales just outside the harbor to kick off our adventure. Throughout the day, we were treated to incredible sights of dolphins playing along our wake and jumping joyfully in the distance. We even had the rare pleasure of encountering a pod of pilot whales near the boat.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly landing a 150lb blue marlin. The fight was thrilling, and the staff were incredibly supportive, guiding us every step of the way. As a special bonus, we also caught my husband’s dream fish—a beautiful 40lb mahi mahi, which we brought back to the harbor and prepared for dinner during our stay.

All in all, our trip was an unforgettable experience, and we are already looking forward to our next trip to Kona.
