Fishing Frenzy!
Fishing Frenzy!
September 11, 2016
We pulled out of the marina and hit the inshore grounds past Faro Viejo well befor daybreak. We hadnt had the lines in 10 minutes when the reels were screaming! Both 30 pound setups with small feathers were burning line! Our anglers were on it and in no time we had a couple of Yellowfin Tuna in the bag. This was the start of an epic day! We continued our couse haeaded towards the Los Arcos area, tacking in and out from **hidden content** feet and picked up another nice Tuna! Then as we reached the Margarita area the dorado started to hit with a frenzy! It was feeding time and those golden grabbers were all over everything! We would raise the school on jijbites and pitch a live bait Caballito into the school and BAM it was multiple hookups! We loaded big time on the Mahi and decided to swing out to deeper water for a marlin. I had one client in my ear murmuring marlin marlin marlin since we pulled out. It was time to quiet this guy down and let him tug on a big one. We went to the dropoff just above Cerros del Golden in about 500 feet of water and switched up to the 50 lb. setups. We had a sewed deadbait medium flat, 2 medium Elkins Swimmers in the long corner and short rigger, and a ballyhoo in the long rigger and long out the back in the stinger. How could we miss? We couldnt as a little Striped Marlin was all over the ballyhoo after just 5 minutes. We hooked that little rascal but he shook the hook after a couple of minutes. My murmuring client was big time bummed, but it didnt take long to wipe that frown off his mug. A nice Striped Marlin came in on the Elkins and before he had a chance to get ahold of it ,my Deckboss Gallo had presented him a dropback livebait Caballito that he couldnt resist ! Frown face was all over it and seventeen minutes later he had caught and released his 1st Marlin! Our amigo was all smiles now and did quite a good job fighting the fish! We turned back to make the troll towards home and in the transcourse we limited out on Dorado and caught 3 more tuna! It was a smoking day onboard Picudo! Gotta love September in Cabo! The sea temps are hovering in the mid 80s and the bait is in thick, this thing is just liable to bust wide open! Cant beat Fall in Cabo San Lucas! It gets no better! Yar!!

Shark Frenzy in Cabo!
Shark Frenzy in Cabo!

It was a great halfday onboard Picudo! We started off blasting into the wind and waves on the Pacific side trying to catch a few dorado for dinner. We had small lures, a couple of hoochies and a ballyhoo out long and the small 30lb. setups allowed us the best chance for those early morning grabbers! Sure enough within an hour we had 3 onboard a handful of skipjack! It was time to change gears as we were getting thrashed and the folks were getting worked, so we u turned and headed out into the calmer waters to look for some marlin or sailfish. A quick switch over to the big setups had us prepared for the fatties and off we went. It was an unprodutive troll down to the 95 fathom spot and despite the cobalt blue 87 degree water we couldnt raise a fish. So with just a couple of hours left we opted to end the day closer in and, sure enough, as we closed in to the 2 mile range the port rigger went off with a hungry striped marlin with a bad attitude started wreaking havoc on the jig! Mate Gallo quickly dropped back a live bait caballito and señor marlin was all over it!! HOOK UP! The angler was in the chair laying into it when the line went slack. Yup we dumped it. Knowing that there were more fish in that area we switched over and put out 3 live bait lines in the water. Slowing to 3 knotswe started working the area trying to raise another one. Thats when it happened! A strong strike on the short bait got our attention as line was ripping off the reel! Our angler did his job and worked that fish big tiime! 20 minutes later we had a 80 lb. silky shark boatside! With the leader in hand we released that bad boy and got the lines back out. Within minutes we had another one and repeated the drill catching, and releasing that silky to fight another day!. The sharks were thick in that area and we proceeded to catch 3 more during the next hour. We exhausted our live bait ad caught the last one on a dorado belly we cut out of the morning catch! It was a shark frenzy for sure! So with sore arms and smiles on our faces we headed back to the marina and called it a day! Gotta love it! Now thats a great halfday in Cabo! Cant wait to get back out! You just know theres a fatty lurkin! Yar!!

Blue Marlin Madness
Blue Marlin Madness
August 18, 2016
It started out as a bummer day as we failed hugely at picking up some Dorados on the beach. We trolled from the Cape all the way up past Cerros del Golden and only scratched up one little one. Id had enough of that and we swung Picudo offshore heading towards the Golden Gate Bank to see if we couldnt get something going. A quick couple of sweeps over the bank produced nothing and the pressure was building, clients were giving me the sideways headcock look and it was time for something to happen. I pointed us towards Jaime Bank for a last chance at glory but as we arrived it was obvious this bank was not holding. No birds, no bait, and nothing on the meter, not even a sea lion to be seen! So I tucked my tail and pointed us towards home, this was turning out bad and more so because we had recently been on a roll!! So off we went and about 1 mile off the highspot we were savagely attacked! This big girl ripped on our short flat 2nd wake lure and just went ballastic! 600 plus lbs. of Blue Marlin fury cut loose as she shredded water and blew spray everywhere! Our angler was in the chair and getting control when she spit the hook!! We freaked, this day was going down as one of the worst!! The last thing I saw was this big girl jumping away from us with massive hatred in her eyes and knowing that she had just whupped us good! Silence took over the boat and some murmurred foul language was heard. I couldnt hide anywhere. So we put the gear back out and did another loop thru the area and sure enough about 10 minutes later here comes another Blue and just smokes my Tigrillo lure in the short rigger! This one stuck and even though only half the size of the first one it gave our angle a great fight! 57 minutes later we caught the fish and the cockpit errupted! we pulled out the day in the 4th quarter and headed home victorious. Thats Blue Marlin fishing for sure, absolute boredome interrupted by the biggest adrenaline rush that exsists!! And as it always seems to happen, the big one always gets away.....for now.
