Fresh Hollywood Fishing Reports

Despite the wild weather we have had here in south Florida the fishing is been quite good. A steady southeast wind during this time has pushed sargassum seaweed along with schools of mahi-mahi inshore, anywhere from 100 out to 300 feet. The schoolie mahi-mahi have been big, running 5-7 lbs., with some larger 10-20 lb. cows and bulls mixed in. Lady Pamela sharkfishing has also been great , as we have caught a few hammerhead sharks, some bull sharks, a thresher, and even a tiger shark. With June just a few days away, we expect to see some big gag, black and red groupers on the shipwrecks. Amberjacks and some cobia will likely be lurking near the surface above these wrecks. You never know. June is also prime daytime swordfishing, with plenty of daylight for extended trips. Yesterday we boated one 150 lb. fish and had 3 bites. Swordfish this time of year produces very good fish, anywhere from 100 to 300 pounds, off 3 to 4 bites per trip. Because we are fishing well offshore in **hidden content** feet of water, mahi-mahi are often attracted to the boats during a drift, so we are always ready with a pitch bait. Tight Lines, Capt. Lady Pamela Sportfishing has had a busy couple of weeks, so I am just now finding the time to update you on the South Florida fishing scene. First, I want to give a shout out to James and his mother Brenda from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. They were in South Florida visiting relatives over spring break and shared a split afternoon charter. James is a high-schooler who has been an avid follower of Lady Pamela fishing, both on the internet and email, for several years now and he finally got the chance to come fishing with us. The fishing on that day was not particularly hot but James did end up landing a nice Blackfin tuna. At least he and his relatives were able to enjoy a nice dinner! This morning fishing was a little different, as the action heated up for six buddies out with us on a six-hour charter. By the time we returned to the dock in the afternoon the gang was able to pose for a nice catch of 3 wahoo, 3 mahi-mahi, a couple of kingfish and a skipjack tuna. Needless to say, there were smiles all around! Mid-April and May is prime time for both daytime big game shark and swordfish action. We are targeting game sharks like hammerheads and threshers with chum slicks in **hidden content** feet of water. Our daytime trips for swords generally run six hours, as we are fishing further offshore in **hidden content** feet of water. The Lady Pamela II charterboats have been catching hammerheads this week for those anglers that are willing to brave the big swells offshore. The northeaster has pushed fair amounts of sargassum seaweed in toward shore so we have seen some 10-15 lb. mahi close to the reef edge. There are plenty of blackfin tunas around, as well as king mackerel outside the reef. Bottomfishing for vermilion snappers and gray tilefish has been exceptionally productive. What a week we have had here at Lady Pamela II sportfishing. I am so excited, I am fresh off the boat and wanted to let you know what’s been going on. Today we hooked up 8 sailfish between two boats and landed a couple of big wahoos that our lucky anglers will be taking home for dinner tonight. We have also had a few king mackerel and some small mahi-mahi, but nothing really big to write home about. I have to say the shark fishing has been exceptional, with our anglers reeling in two hammerheads in the 6-8 foot range this week. The big catch though, was the massive tiger shark we hooked up earlier this week. This fish was estimated to be nearly 1,000 lbs. which is right at the top end of the size range for this species. Lady Pamela sportfishing has caught a few tiger sharks in the 500-lb. range off the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood area, but nothing like this behemoth. The last time I saw a tiger shark this big I was a snot-nosed 13-year-old that was lucky enough to go fishing with famed Captain Lou Rabin aboard the Bewitched II out of Bimini. That fish was 15 feet long and weighed over 1,000 lbs. The fish we hooked up this week was just about as big, and just as exciting to catch. I am writing to bring you up to date on the exciting fishing action we have had off the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood area. The last week or so Lady Pamela sportfishing has been catching a few king mackerel, bluefish, and wahoos in around 300 to 400 feet of water. A little further out, in **hidden content** feet of water, the shark fishing has also been good. We caught a variety of sharks including hammerheads, makos, and a thresher shark. Live-baiting from kites has produced more mahi-mahi than sailfish in the **hidden content** foot depth range. Small schools of 5-7 fish were having a great time chasing our surface baits under the kites. Out closer to 300 feet of water we caught 3 sails while trolling and caught a few more while slow trolling live bonitos. It is hard to believe that December is knocking on the door, but the new month brings new fishing opportunities in the Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood area. This time last year it seemed like we were hooking up at least two sails on every trip, as long as the seas were not too rough. This is the time of year for seasoned fishermen that do not mind a bit of choppy water to really load up on fishing action. Disturbed seas make the baitfish skittish and big predators hungry. Along with sails, I expect the wahoo bite to kick off in the next week or two. Kingfish, bonitos, and blackfin tunas are still around the reef edges, and we are picking them off with seawitch feathers tipped with bonito belly.
