Trip Summary

Flipper II competed yesterday in the first Wahoo competition held out of Calheta Marina. The Crew aboard taking part included Captains Neil French and Micky French along with our wireman Claudio and the angler was good friend fron the UK Mr Steve Cowley. In total 9 boats from the marina entered the competition mainly the Big Game Fishing boats and also a couple of private boats. We left the marina and headed West in good sunshine and calm seas and were quickly pulling our chosen lures in the hope of landing a nice big Wahoo. With the weather being kind we ventured all the way round the point of Madeira island and fished all the way round to the North side to Porto Moniz. Around 12.20pm we got our first strike of the day quickly followed by a second. Two fish on and Steve worked well to get both fish to the boat. Unfortunately the bites were not from Wahoo but two very nice Pompano Dolphinfish (mahi). A little later on we get another strike and again it was not the target species for the competition but Steve landed a nice Barracuda. It was soon time for lines in and we headed back to the marina. As it turned out none of the boats had managed to hook up and land a Wahoo so we were excited that at least we had landed 3 nice fish knowing that only one other boat had landed 2 small fish and another boat had caught 1. Despite these 3 nice fish the organiser decided that as no Wahoo were caught the first place would go to the heaviest fish of the day and so Flipper II took 2nd place in this comp. We congratulate with winner!! Well done on your win with your 8lb Grouper. (Sorry I dont have a photo) Also congratulations to 3rd place winners which was our friends fishing on their private boat Taka Tuka.
