Trip Summary

Hello everyone Capt. Vinnie here, for this weeks report here in Fort Lauderdale the best way to describe it would be TOUGH!!! Deep Sea Fishing in December can be tricky always fishing around cold fronts its going to make it difficult no matter what, changing conditions every couple days makes it tough to try and figure out a pattern. The first two weeks of December are notorious for not being super busy but we were able to make it out a few times and I have a report for you guys. We will start offshore with some Mahi. If you are able to find something to fish to offshore right now like current rips, weeds, or even debris it has been money in the bank and you can guarantee the mahi mahis will be there. This week we found a nice current edge in 800 feet of water that had numerous floating debris as well as some seaweed and the fish were there! Surface baits with bonito strips have been working best for 2 reasons. Number 1. being its a smaller profile and it appeals to fish of all sizes and Number 2. bonito strips tend to not catch as much seaweed as other baits say like a ballyhoo, so less seaweed fetch ups the more natural your bait is going to look. Its is getting late in the season for mahi and it can be a gamble to go look for them this time of year but if you can find something to fish to they have been there every time. Average size has been around 10lbs. Moving inshore trolling on the reef has been very slow not much going on right now only thing to report has been a few kingfish. Later afternoons on the reef is going to give you the best window for bites right now. Seems like the blackfin tunas have showed up when the sun gets low, 150 to 300 feet is the best depth to be fishing for the blackfin tuna. Its hard to go wrong with small spoons fished under the surface using a planer as well as small squid lures and feathers fished on the surface. There has been a few bonitos mixed in with the tunas and the average size on the tunas has been around 5lbs but there have been some larger ones close to 15lbs being caught as well. Bottom fishing for vermillion snappers and other good tasting bottom dwellers has been the most consistent bite from what I have seen right now. Hard bottom in depths around 200 feet has been holding the vermillion snappers the best right now. Besides vermillion snappers there has been a mixed bag of porgies, almaco jacks, trigger fish, and some lane snappers all mixed in. Bottom fishing has been the best technique if your looking to put some meat in the box. Average size on the snappers has been around 2-3lbs. As for the fishing it will being to improve specially if the conditions remain steady for a few days in a row. I would imagine the sailfish bite to pick up just like it did in the month of November and for the tunas to become a very steady thing for us in the afternoons. Also on the full moon coming up hopefully there will be a nice showing of a few wahoo. Finishing August With A Bang In Fort Lauderdale Hello everyone, Capt. Vinnie here. Its been a great week this week fishing here in Fort Lauderdale still super calm weather and some excellent catches as well. For the report this week we are going to begin on the reef. Trolling in the early mornings there has been pretty much non stop action on the false albacore right now, depths around 100 feet to 200 is going to be the best place to target them. Surface baits have been working well, also baits fished below the surface using a planner with a spoon has been just plain deadly. Other then false albacore there has been a few blackfin tunas mixed in and a few king mackeral are starting to show back up as well. This week we did manage to get super lucky and catch what I would say is the fish of a lifetime specially for our waters here in Fort Lauderdale. We caught a 70inch wahoo weighing 63lbs (pictured) in 600 feet of water on one of our deep lines with a sea witch and fresh bonito strip combo. We do catch a fair amount of wahoo through the year here but not many are as big as this one they seem to average 15-25lbs. Staying offshore there has been a few mahi mahi around but some days they are just easier to find then others, recently we had a bunch of wind from the west and that made it somewhat difficult to find the mahi, the west wind pushed them offshore so to speak. I still would continue to look for weed lines as well as birds if your heading offshore and it wouldn’t hurt to bring a few live baits as well just incase. Bottom fishing report has been super solid this week with some great catches of vermillion snappers as well as a few porgies. There has been very light current this week so we have been able to target these fish more accurately. Depths with structure around 200 feet has been producing consistent results of nice snappers. Average size on the snappers has been 2-3 lbs with a few almost in the 5lb range. For the upcoming next few weeks looks like some great weather on the horizon, and the month of September is notorious for some great catches while out deep sea fishing. We should see some sailfish, as well as some great mahi mahi action and some bigger ones at that. Also bottom fishing for snapper is something that is great in the month of September. A lot to look to specially in future reports, so if your thinking about coming down to south Florida for maybe a few days or even for an extended vacation the month of September is a great time to get out and do some deep sea fishing. Hello everyone, Capt. Vinnie here. Its been a great week we have had to start off the month of September. We are starting to see some cooler temps somewhat compared to the previous months of July and August and the fishing has been pretty decent as well. For the report this week inshore has been were most of the action has been, trolling has been the standard to start with first thing in the morning specially if your getting out early. The main species we have been trying to target is the wahoo which we did catch a beautiful one this week while trolling. The wahoo we caught ate a purple and White Sea witch with a fresh bonito strip and weighed just under 30lbs. Other then wahoo there has been a good amount of barracudas right now and some small bonitos too. The bonito have definitely slowed down from how they were a few weeks ago as we are beginning to transition to our fall fishing patterns. As far as kingfish goes there has been a select few caught while trolling but if it were me I would invest more time in the wahoo fishing while chances are high to get one. Offshore report for mahi mahi has been non existent right now, can you get lucky and catch a few absolutely but for the most part it has been very very slow, I would say the culprit for that is the westerly breeze we have been having that is pushing them further and further offshore. We need the wind to shift more south east or direct east and that will push them closer to us. Bottom fishing has been very very good right now for species like snapper and amberjack. Vermillion snapper along with a few yellow eye snapper have been biting very well on most hard bottom spots around 250 feet. I have been trying to fish areas with big marks of bait and fish for the best results, average size on the snappers has been about 2lbs with some up to 4lbs. Amberjacks have been biting pretty good right now not on the wrecks like normal but more on our bottom spots that are marking heavy concentrations of snappers. I believe the amberjacks are there eating the snappers. So we have been dropping a heavy rod with 100lb test line on these spots with a live bait and having some good success with some larger hard fighting amberjacks up to 50lbs. Amberjack have the nick name reef donkey because of how stubborn they are and how hard they fight, they also can be goods table fair as well. A lot of amberjack meat is good smoked and made into a fish dip. Hello everyone, Capt. Vinnie here, this week fishing has been on the up and up here in Fort Lauderdale. Even though the kids have went back to school and the business as been somewhat slow there still has been some very nice fish to catch right now. For the report this week on the inshore side of things there has been a good amount of sailfish being caught right now, the majority of the sailfish have been caught while trolling using surface baits unlike in the winter time when we are using kites with live baits to target sailfish. Most of the sailfish bites have been in depths around 100-300 feet of water and the average size fish has been around 70inches long. Other then sailfish there has been some false albacore on the reef in great numbers and some kingfish as well. All this action is taking place inside of 300 feet of water. Bottom fishing report this week has been very solid with some jumbo vermilion snappers. This time of year we seem to catch the biggest vermillion snappers due to the fact that they are spawning, most of the larger ones are females and have eggs. Vermillion snappers are a smaller snapper in size but what they lack in size they make up for it on the table. Depths around 200 feet have been seeing the best results and fresh cut pieces of false albacore has been our bait of choice. Average size on the snappers right now have been around 2-3lbs with a few close to the 5lb mark. Moving offshore the mahi mahi has been the hot topic of the week. There has been some great mahi action offshore in depths around 800 feet and some nice ones too, Lots of floating pieces of seaweed out there right now but the key is going to be the birds. If you can find birds your going to catch fish. The birds we are looking for are smaller in size we call them fluter birds because there typically just above the waters edge and there wings are flapping very fast, hence flutter birds. These birds are never solo if you see one there will be more close by. Right now going mahi fishing I still recommend and all day charter of 8 hours so you have plenty of time to find the birds and the fish, also its important to bring some live bait with you as well incase you run into a school of mahi. I have a great photo this week of a great mahi catch we had were we caught 25 keeper mahi. The average size of the mahi right now have been anywhere from 5 to 15lbs.
