We had a really terrific fishing experience with Captain T. In mid-March, we set out from Grand Isle to fish for sheepshead. Captain T and his first mate were waiting for us at the marina with a warm welcome and live shrimp. Because it was foggy and windy, we spent the first hour fishing for speckled trout behind the island, but as soon as conditions improved, we headed off-shore to one of the old oil rigs that is the Captain’s sheepshead spot. (He goes to other rigs for mangrove snapper and red snapper.) . It was located close to shore, so we got there quick and got our lines in the water. It was one of the best fishing days we’ve had – my son and I hauled in 30 sheepshead in the five hours or so that we were there, as well as one mangrove snapper and a few spadefish. They sheepshead were big—most of them over 15”—and they had lots of great fight in them! There’s no limit in Louisiana, but we caught so many that we released the last couple. When we got back to the marina, the first met filleted them for us so we could bring them home and vacuum pack them for the freezer.
The fishing was incredible, but a good guide makes all the difference. Captain T knew right where to go, and the first mate kept our hooks baited. When we broke a line, they got a new hook on right away. We almost always had our lines in the water. Captain T also gave us some great tips for catching the sheepies. They have a very hard mouth, and they chew the bait rather than swallowing it, so you fish them a little differently than redfish or trout. Captain T embodies an island vibe—he is super friendly and laid back, you’re not just a customer to him. He’s also a genuinely good person. When we had to call a mechanic out from New Orleans to fix our car, he loaned us his golf cart for the evening so we didn’t have to walk to the supermarket and restaurant. We’re excited to go back and fish with Captain T again—snapper season opens in May!
