First off, thank you for your business and i’m sorry you did not enjoy your day. I wanted to touch on a few points you made in your review. Starting off, we surely did not arrive late. We were at the boat at 4:30am and the boat left the slip before 5, so in actuality we left before the trip was scheduled to.  Secondly, the offshore trip is a trolling OR chunking trip as you will find in the description listed on the site.  If we had chunked, it would have been an even slower day and probably would have resulted in no fish at all.  Ask any captain in the area about when and where they chunk for tuna and I can promise you that no one uses this method until late July when the fish have moved to the inshore lumps… not in the canyon. 

I apologize for fishing being slow but we boated a nice 50lb yellowfin, which is by no means a “small” one and it would have provided you and your family with a weeks worth of some of the best tuna you would have ever had.  We should have caught two but had some bad luck and pulled the hook on the second fish. If you do not believe me that fishing was super slow for everyone and not just us, please refer to the **hidden content** and read the captain’s reports for the 28th. Some of the best boats in the area didn’t even get a tuna bite all day, so we were lucky to have caught what we did. There you will also see that some of those same captains also tried trolling inshore of the canyon, because as you know, fish swim and often come inside of the canyon to feed.

You do not need to always be in the canyon to catch them. We trolled out to 3,000 feet of water and then worked back inshore to 200 feet multiple times throughout the day to try and find the fish covering a very large area.  You claimed it to be “dead water” but we marked bait, fish, and had sea life all around us throughout the day, we just couldn’t get them to bite.  Surely you can understand that sometimes the fish just do not cooperate.  If you were interested in deep dropping, that is something that needed to be discussed beforehand. That requires bringing completely different equipment, tackle, and bait, making it more difficult of a switch from tuna fishing than you may think. Had you mentioned wanting to do this beforehand, we would have gladly done that for you. 

You make the issue about paying for the trip seem very one sided.  You were trying to refuse to pay for the trip because of your unhappiness.  Your unhappiness was a little confusing to us considering it was a gorgeous day on the ocean with great weather and we were bringing home fish for you guys.  The mate was frustrated because he worked endlessly to try and ensure you guys had a good day. Your tip is not only for the work he does while on the trip but for the countless hours of prep and tackle work that you do not see behind the scenes. In my 20+ years of fishing, and his 10+ years working as a professional mate you are the only person to ever not tip the mate.  He works extremely hard and we even caught you guys some fresh tuna to take home.  You complained about not catching enough fish but then turned around and refused to take the catch.

You also left out the part when he first questioned you for not tipping your response was “Meet me in the parking lot if you want your tip so bad”. 
Lastly
Law enforcement was notified because you refused to pay for the trip.
Not tipping the mate although not theft of service is 100%
Wrong no matter how good or bad the fishing.
