Deep Sea Fishing in South Carolina

Feeling the salty breeze on your face as you look out across the water hoping for a huge Sailfish or Marlin, or hearing the reel scream as you hook a deep-dwelling Redfish – that’s what deep sea fishing in South Carolina is all about!

Deep Sea Fishing Spots

South Carolina’s charter captains aren’t afraid of the deep sea and will gladly take you fishing for the big boys that lurk there. They’re experienced in taking both first-time anglers as well as experienced sea-wolves out to fish, so rest assured, you’re in excellent hands.

Charleston

Centrally located on the SC coastline, Charleston is a very popular angler destination, for good reason. A great variety of charter captains are happy to take you fishing into the deep sea. The Gulf Stream is about 55 miles away from the city. You can expect to go on longer trips due to the distance, so set aside a whole day just for reeling keepers in!

Hilton Head Island

Deep sea fishing from Hilton Head Island is a favorite of both local anglers and ones who arriving from afar. The Gulf Stream is some 60 miles away from Hilton Head, so get ready for about an hour and a half of boating before you get to the action. Don’t worry about it though, the charter captains at Hilton Head have vast experience with serious deep sea fishing and they’ll entertain you along the way.

Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach

Some of the most famous and popular beaches in the entire US are in this area, but you’re not here for sandy relaxation. Step aboard one of the many charters in the area and head into the deep waters for some reel-screaming action.

What you can catch

Deep sea fishing off the coast of South Carolina can net you a variety of different fish, which you can catch using different techniques. Bottom fishing allows you to target various Groupers, Red and Vermillion Snappers, some of the tastiest fish to frequent these waters. If you’re a fan of trolling for high-speed predators these waters provide you with plenty of Wahoo, Kingfish, Sailfish, Blue and White Marlin, and Spanish Mackerel to tighten your lines. Albacore Tunas and False Albacores are also on the target list.

What equipment to bring

An intense desire to catch gorgeous fish! Other than that, the charters in South Carolina provide excellent service to their customers – they’ll provide you with all the serious sportfishing equipment that this requires. Strap on a fighting belt, the pull you’ll experience is something fierce in the deep blue waters.

When to go

Bluewater action heats up with the weather and is dependant on the migration of the pelagic predators. As the summer months warm up the waters the offshore fish will start moving in closer to the coast. However, the warm summer weather has its drawbacks, when the sun is too hot they’ll retreat into the cooler depths – electric reels for bottom fishing are a must. The best months to go for some reel-screaming bluewater action are from May to September. That period covers Mackerel migrations, the Sailfish and Marlin moving in closer from the Gulf Stream, as well as increased activity of Snappers and Groupers.

South Carolina has a lot to offer to the saltwater angler, from bottom fishing gorgeous Snappers and Groupers to the adrenaline rush of chasing a monster Sailfish across the deep blue sea. Its charter captains are experienced with customers with the know-how to make anyone’s fishing trip extremely enjoyable. All in all, fishing in South Carolina is a fantastic package – head on down there and see for yourself!

What anglers said about Deep Sea Fishing in South Carolina

We've taken numerous charters and have to say Capt Jack is great! He got us on flounder and redifsh ten minutes into the trip and stayed on them throughout, even through high winds and partial slack tide. He gave us some great info on rigging and where to get on the fish no matter what the tide was doing. I recommend him highly. We'll be in touch with him again next year. :-) Tim B.

My skill is limited, was honest and the Captain built the trip around that information. AM is what I like but the tide is what you want, movement so the fish are biting. Best of luck.

Book as soon as you can, and talk with your Captain. If it is your first time out on a charter they can provide you with the best information possible for your trip.

I will, definitely recommend this trip for anyone who wants to go fishing. However, I would say if you have small children, tell the Captain you want to stay in calmer waters.

The weather can be hit and miss from one day to the next and the temperatures can slow the bite, a longer trip will allow time to get out further and get to cooler waters which will increase the bite.
