Spear Fishing in Puerto Rico

Spearfishing in Puerto Rico pairs warm Caribbean water with clear visibility and lively reefs. Calm bays, fringing reefs, and dramatic drop-offs sit close to shore, so you spend more time in the water. It is an exciting way to hunt your own dinner and see tropical life up close.

Reefs and ledges hold Hogfish, Groupers, and several Snappers, including Mutton and Cubera. You can also find Jacks and Barracuda around structure. On bluewater days, experienced freedivers may spot Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, or Tuna along current lines.

Most trips focus on reef spearfishing while snorkeling or freediving. Beginners start shallow over sand and patch reefs, then move to coral heads and ledges. Guides explain safety, buddy diving, proper shot placement, and how to handle fish at the surface.

Trips suit first-timers, families with teens, and seasoned spearos. Expect a detailed briefing, patient coaching, and careful fish handling. Many charters provide gear, but you can bring a mask, snorkel, fins, and a well-fitted wetsuit top. Pack sun protection, water, and a towel, and tell your captain if you want to keep fish for dinner.

Because Puerto Rico is an island, good areas exist on every coast. The north coast has reef lines and ledges near the Atlantic. The east has island hopping around Fajardo, Vieques, and Culebra. The south offers calmer water, mangrove edges, and patch reefs. The west features clear days and quick access to drop-offs.

Before you go, check local rules on licenses, permits, seasons, and harvest. Some species or areas may be closed, including marine reserves. Ask your captain about what is legal to target and current retention rules.

Puerto Rico Spear Fishing Seasons

September is peak rainy season, and intense storms can make fishing difficult. They don't put out the fire in the Blue Marlin bite, though. Head to the west of the island to battle these beasts in the Mona Passage.

The Capt and Crew Victor were fantastic and so helpful. The 8 hr trip was successful as we landed 5 fish. While the water was a bit rough the crew safely navigated the seas for a trip of a life time. Thank you
