Fishing in Dominican Republic

There’s no doubt that the Dominican Republic boasts some of the best fishing in the Caribbean. Seasoned anglers come here to test their skills and hook a monster, beginners are dazzled by the promise of world-class action, and Dominican Republic fishing charters can accommodate them all. No matter how big your appetite is, there’s a fish for you in these gorgeous waters.

This island country is undoubtedly best known for its bluewater fishing. Not only is the season open year-round, but you can also target Billfish whenever you come. Sailfish, White and Blue Marlin, powerful Swordfish – they’re all permanent residents here. The best thing – you can target Marlin just miles from the beach! If somehow that’s not enough, add Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and King Mackerel to the list.

Big game fishing is a huge deal in the Dominican Republic, but what a lot of people overlook is that the inshore bite is just as good. Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon dominate the flats and, on the nearby reefs, you can hook into Snapper, Grouper, Rainbow Runner, and Amberjack.

Because they’re blessed with such productive waters, Dominicans are angling experts. This is why going out with a Dominican Republic fishing charter is invaluable – they’ll know where the fish are. There’s a lot of specialized trips to choose from, including Swordfish hunts, Billfish Grand Slams, and pelagic jaunts. If you prefer taking it easy, book a half day excursion on the reefs that promises lots of fun and plenty of tasty fish.

One of the best fishing spots on the island is definitely Punta Cana, closely followed by La Romana, and Puerto Plata.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses are not required aboard Dominican Republic fishing charters, as your captain will take care of it for you. Catch and release is mandatory for all Billfish.

Dominican Republic Fishing Seasons

January

Is there a better way to start the year than by battling Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and more in the deep blue waters around Punta Cana? The answer is simple – no, there isn’t!

February

Locals celebrate their independence throughout the month and, when you’re not enjoying the festivities, hit the reefs for some fantastic Snapper and Grouper action, or go to the flats and enjoy fly fishing for Permit, Tarpon, and Bonefish.

March

White Marlin are around all year, but from March onwards, things hit a whole new level. Hundreds of these strong fighters can be found right along the shoreline, and even a half day trip is a serious workout.

April

White Marlin hit their peak in April, and boats crowd the eastern coastline for a slice of the action. There’s plenty of fish to go around, and double-digit releases are an everyday occurrence.

White Marlin hit their peak in April, and boats crowd the eastern coastline for a slice of the action. There are plenty to go around, don’t worry. Lucky anglers can get 20+ releases in a single day!

May

May is the calm before the storm in the Dominican Republic, and we’re not just talking about the weather. Blue Marlin madness hasn’t kicked off yet, so it’s a great time to hit the reefs for Snapper and Grouper.

June

Blue Marlin start to show up in larger numbers around the northern FADs (fish aggregating devices), just as the White Marlin migration moves to the north. The heavy tackle season has officially begun, so strap in and have fun.

July

Blue Marlin really hit their stride in July. This is some of the best Billfishing on the planet, with huge numbers of fish swarming the FADs in search of a colorful teaser or well-placed fly to jump at.

August

If you somehow get bored of big game sportfishing, head down to Santo Domingo and the Merengue and Caribbean Rhythms Festival. Alternatively, you can visit the reefs and enjoy the excellent bite of Snapper, Rainbow Runner, and Grouper.

September

September is the hottest and wettest month of the year, with tropical storms and crippling heat putting anglers to the test. This is also the best time of year for Blue Marlin, so the effort will be well worth it.

October

The Blue Marlin season draws to a close in October, but that doesn’t mean the end of the Billfishing. The Sailfish have just gotten started and will get better and better as time goes on.

November

Inshore fishing picks up in November, with better catches of Tarpon, Permit, Snook, and Bonefish. Offshore, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi offer awesome trolling or fly fishing action.

December

Can’t face the crowds, cold, and carols this year? Head to the Caribbean to enjoy warm weather, sandy beaches, and top-notch Sailfishing instead. It could just turn out to be the best Christmas ever!
