Fishing in Italy

Surrounded by four seas, and boasting lakes and rivers galore, Italy’s angling scene is one of the best in Europe. From small boats that will take you nearshore, to big offshore sportfishing vessels, there’s a fishing charter in Italy for all kinds of anglers, giving you the chance to land some delicious dinner or battle a monster fish.

Whether in the Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, Ionian, or Ligurian Sea, you’ll target the same fish, by and large. Hit the nearshore reefs or fish around the islands and you’ll come into contact with  Barracuda, Bonito, Bluefish, Jacks, Seabass, Seabream, Grouper, Rays, and even Sharks. While that’s plenty to get your teeth into, the real prizes await offshore, with delicious Swordfish, Spearfish, Mahi Mahi, and Bluefin Tuna on offer.

You’ll also find some Italian fishing guides along the rivers and lakes inland. Europe’s answer to the Great Lakes is geared up for tourism in the north, with Lakes Como, Maggiore, and Garda the pick of the bunch. Hit the Tiber, Sieve, Ticino, Adige, Tagliamento, Brenta, and Sarca Rivers for a spot of fly fishing, and you could catch world-class Trout, monster Catfish, and delicious Carp, Pike, Perch, and Grayling.

Wherever you are in the boot, a guide or charter is not far away. If you’re in the capital, then Ostia is your best bet for fishing, while Naples and further south are also great starting points in the west. Puglia in the south-east is your best bet for the Adriatic, but don’t forget about Venice, Rimini, and other tourist resorts. Meanwhile, Sicily and Sardinia pretty much live on fishing.

Rules & Regulations

Saltwater fishing can be done completely free of charge without the need for a license. However, freshwater fishing requires a Type D license for foreigners, or Type B license for locals. You’ll also need a Tax ID to get your license, so you’re better off going with a professional guide who’ll sort it for you.

Italy Fishing Seasons

January

You won’t have the chance to experience much of Italy’s big game fishing in January, but you can bring home a full cooler after a few hours of nearshore trolling and bottom fishing.

February

You can bring home a decent haul in February, when you’re likely to catch Amberjack, Grouper, Bonito, Conger Eel, and more when bottom fishing nearshore or around the islands.

March

The fishing offshore is starting to pick up momentum, as Bluefin Tuna make their way toward the southern Adriatic. Amberjack, Bonito, and False Albacore are at their peak, too so, get ready for a mixed bag.

April

In southern Italy, anglers are hooking into big, bad Bluefin Tuna! You can also try trolling or deep-dropping 10-30 miles offshore for Spearfish to land some truly prized meat.

May

By May, Bluefins fill up the Adriatic, with a trip from Puglia or Venice offering equal rewards. Don't forget about the Tyrrhenian Sea, though, as the annual Bluefin harvest (Mattanza) lights up Sardinia.

June

Bluefins are at their peak in the northern Adriatic. Thresher Sharks, Spearfish, Dentex, and more are on the cards at this time of year. Summer is also a good time for shore angling, so it's all possible!

July

Italy’s deep sea fishing is the best it’s been all year! Haven’t found your sea legs yet? Try drifting and trolling with live baits close to shore for Amberjack, Dentex, Grouper, Bluefish, and Garrick.

August

Fishing offshore will fetch you anything from Bluefin and Albacore Tuna to Mahi Mahi, Spearfish, and Swordfish. Freshwater anglers are hooking into Carp, Catfish, Trout, and more, so try it all!

September

Come early autumn, Bluefin Tuna start leaving the northern Adriatic. Bluefin fishing will be fantastic in southern Italy for several months more, while freshwater fishing in the rivers and lakes is at its peak.

October

Whether you’re one for fly fishing in the lakes and rivers or a hardcore deep sea angler, Italy is sure to deliver in autumn! Many big game fish are at their peak in October, as are Carp, Catfish, and other freshwater fish.

November

Bluefin begin to leave leaving the central Adriatic in late fall as they head back to the Mediterranean. Spearfish and Swordfish will continue biting through the off-season, however, so there's always the chance of a trophy.

December

With the height of Italy’s deep sea fishing behind you, December can be a great time to see what’s biting in the estuaries. You can catch Chub, Garrick, Dentex, Seabass, Bream, and more in just a couple of hours.
