Fishing in Portugal

The Portugal fishing scene needs no introduction. This country is known far and wide for its world-class angling opportunities. Tourists visit the westernmost country of Europe to witness the stunning beauty of its cities, taste the sweet local wine, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Fishermen, however, come to Portugal looking for their next adventure and trophy catches.

Portugal is synonymous with premier big game fishing in the deep bluewaters of the Atlantic Ocean. Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Longbill Spearfish, Bluefin Tuna, and Swordfish are all abundant here. In the summer months, grander Marlin join the fray, and the action is fast and furious. Nighttime Swordfishing and Tuna hunts follow closely behind. If you feel like catching your dinner, set your sights on Mahi Mahi, Dentex, Snapper, John Dory, and Bluefish.

Portugal isn't just about ocean fishing though, and freshwater anglers will have plenty to do here. Trout fishing is big on the mainland, especially in the summer months, and Brown Trout are most sought-after. You can also chase after Atlantic (Iberian) Salmon in the freshwater streams and rivers from March-July. Good old Carp, Largemouth Bass, and Barbel are biting year-round.

There are more than a few places in the country where you can get a taste of the superb fishing action. You'll find plenty of Portugal fishing charters running out of Azores, Madeira, Funchal, and Lagos. Lima and Minho Rivers are the best spots for excellent freshwater fishing.

Rules & Regulations

When you go fishing with one of Portugal's fishing charters, you don't need to worry about fishing licenses, as they're included in the price of the trip. Solo anglers, however, need to do some research and figure out which type of license they need, which can take time and energy. Bear in mind that paper licenses are no longer issued. Instead, everything is done online.

Portugal Fishing Seasons

  • January

Start the new year with the sound of a screaming reel instead of the holiday music! Albacore Tuna show up in the Azores, which means great catches and a lot of fun. You can also hit the reefs anywhere in Portugal and bring home some dinner.

  • February

Cast out the February blues by reeling in delicious bottom fish like Cod, Seabass, Dusky Grouper, Amberjack, and Dentex! What you catch will depend on where you go, but it's sure to taste great!

  • March

Bigeye Tuna show up in Madeira this time of year. They're one of the tastiest Tuna species out there and they put up a real fight, too. Largemouth Bass are biting hard in Portugal's rivers and lakes.

  • April

The Albacore bite draws to a close in the Azores as Swordfishing heats up in the Algarve. Salmon and Shad kick off their spring runs, while Bigeye Tuna keep on attacking live bait with abandon in Madeira.

  • May

Blue and White Marlin arrive in Madeira, joined by good numbers of Longbill Spearfish. Bigeye Tuna show up in the Azores as the first Bluefin appear close to the mainland. The Shad and Salmon season is in full swing!

  • June

In June, Billfish season really comes into its own around Portugal's islands. White Marlin and Longbill Spearfish arrive in the Azores, while all the Atlantic's top predators hunt around Madeira.

  • July

In the Blue Marlin World Cup, teams around the world compete to bring in huge fish, and that's more than possible in July. Just about anything is biting now, from Tuna and Wahoo to Carp and Trout in the rivers.

  • August

Blue Marlin finally arrive in the Azores, meaning it's all action everywhere in Portugal. The mainland's seasonal freshwater fish have all moved on, but you can still enjoy the great Carp fishing Portugal has to offer.

  • September

The Azores Big Game Fishing Tournament offers epic bluewater action in Sao Miguel while Bluefin Tuna join the lineup of deep sea species in Madeira. Otherwise, there's always plenty of reef fish!

  • October

This is your last chance to land monster Blue and White Marlin wherever you are in Portugal. If you're more interested in rivers or reefs, Portugal fishing trips are great whenever you come!

  • November

Big game season is over in most places but the reef fish are always on form. Head out on a bottom fishing trip and bring in anything from Amberjack to Monkfish, depending on where you go.

  • December

Escape the cold and head to the Algarve to enjoy the Bass fishing Portugal is so rightfully proud of. Otherwise, spend the holidays on the Azores and catch some delicious bottom fish, just in time for the holiday dinner.
