FAQs about Fishing Charters in Tamarindo

The average price for a private 4 hour Tamarindo fishing trip is $619, while an 8 hour private trip will cost you $1,020 based on prices on FishingBooker.com.

According to customer reviews, Sea Breeze Fishing & Adventures, Capullo Sportfishing/Rainbow Runner, and Rhino Charger Sport Fishing are some of the most popular fishing charters in Tamarindo, Guanacaste. Full list of top fishing charters in Tamarindo.

Sea Breeze Fishing & Adventures, Capullo Sportfishing/Rainbow Runner, and Rhino Charger Sport Fishing all received great reviews from families who booked fishing trips in Tamarindo.

The most popular fish species you can target are Roosterfish, Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), and Sailfish. Top fishing techniques include bottom fishing, trolling, and light tackle. Inshore fishing, offshore fishing, and nearshore fishing are commonly offered by local guides.

As Guanacaste’s largest resort town, Tamarindo stands out for any tourist wishing to visit Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. But the true highlight is the sheer number of Tamarindo fishing charters that are ready to take you on the angling adventure of a lifetime. In fact, the town was the first to really take advantage of its fishing tourism potential back in the ‘80s, and it’s no wonder why!

Just a few miles from shore, you’ll find three kinds of Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, and many more big game prizes. However, within spitting distance from land, you’ll also be able to take on some real beauties. Roosterfish and Snook are the trophies for catch-and-release anglers, while Snappers and Triggerfish will provide for a tasty treat after your trip.

The beauty of fishing here is that everything can be done in just a few hours when the summer season hits. However, if you want to go after the biggest of the offshore beasts, you’ll want to dedicate a full day to reach the deep waters. Beginners and families are more suited to shorter trips, with pros being able to enjoy anything from a few hours to a few days of fishing.

Tamarindo’s fishing marina is smaller than some of the other, larger towns on the Pacific Coast, but that actually gives you an advantage. Charters aren’t as expensive as elsewhere, but, of course, the longer you want to spend on the water, the more you’ll have to pay.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler on board a Tamarindo fishing charter will need a fishing license. Grab yours online from the INCOPESCA website, or get in touch with your captain who can sort it out for you. Your professional guide will also make sure that you practice catch-and-release on Billfish and Roosterfish, and help you keep within legal limits.

January

The winter months are peak tourist season in Costa Rica, and with good reason. What better way to start the year than by fishing offshore for Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna?

February

Full day trips will give you plenty of time to head south in search of Billfish, while the year-round populations of Roosterfish and Snook are a perfect alternative when the winds kick up on a half day.

March

Spend the day battling Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Roosterfish, and Snook, then head to the annual Tamarindo Artisanal Beer Festival to celebrate your catches and mourn the ones that got away.

April

April marks the end of high tourist season and the beginning of the rains. The Tamarindo fishing calendar is just kicking off, though, and April is one of the best months of the year for offshore big game fishing.

May

The high winds of winter are just a memory come May, and the local fishing grounds are back on form. You can travel 20 minutes from land and be targeting Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and more.

June

Tamarindo fishing seasons don't change much, but the offshore bite gets more active in the summer. June sees an increase in Mahi, joining the big numbers of Marlin, Sailfish, and Tuna.

July

July 25th is Guancaste Day, celebrating the annexation of the province in 1827. There are celebrations and festivities across much of the province, making for the perfect end to a great day's fishing.

August

August is the last great month of summer in Tamarindo's deep sea fishing scene. Target Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo, all just a short boat ride from town!

September

The whole of Central America celebrates its independence from Spain on September 15th. Unsurprisingly, this is quite a big deal, and you can expect happy crowds, celebrations, music, and dancing.

October

The golden months of summer may be fading by October but so is the humidity, and with plenty of Billfish found year-round in Costa Rica, October is still a great month to visit Tamarindo.

November

November marks the start of high season but doesn't draw the same crowds as December and January. This is a great time to get offshore before the winds and other boats ruin the fun.

December

Tamarindo is busy in December, there's no avoiding that. There is a very good reason for it, though, with warm weather and great fishing. You may not get the place to yourself but it will still be great fun!

Arms were almost dropping off after 4hrs of fun action at 400ft deep. Crew were awesome, helpful and knowledgeable... was concerned afternoon rain might cut us short but offshore stayed away from bad weather on land. Great fun but would do the whole day and try trophy fishing in same trip if I had chance again . Thanks

I would like send a HUGE thank you to Captain Jon’s crew, David, Luis and Alex. They were all so helpful and kind. We had a fantastic day fishing. It was a quiet start despite the crews tireless efforts. By early afternoon, we caught a beautiful mahi-mahi then a 200+ pound marlin. It was an unforgettable experience! You will not be disappointed! Pura Vida!

Had a great time! Started the day going offshore looking for clean water. Finally found some and captain and mate knew exactly what they were doing and located the fish that the boats around us couldn't get onto. Followed pods of dolphins that were driving bait fish all day. Landed mahi mahi and tuna. Thanks!

The captain was very knowledgeable and took us right to where the fish were biting. We ended up getting a few types of tuna including yellowfin. The first mate was very kind and the two of them made this an unforgettable trip.

The two people working the boat were very nice and extremely friendly. We had a couple of young children on the boat and the crew was very accommodating. This was my grandson's first experience of deep sea fishing and he really enjoyed it. They did an awesome job.

Noah and Darcy were phenomenal guides. We booked a 3/4 day trip for our honeymoon hoping to catch some big ones, and we did! They knew all the spots and made sure we came home with dinner (for a week!). We would HIGHLY recommend and will absolutely book them again in the future. Thanks you both for a great trip. Ps- we saw the biggest pod of dolphins ever!!!! 200+! And a bull shark ate our bait. Yes… my first time out in the ocean (but husband is a pro and also had a great time).

Gerald is a great captain and guide. Went over and aboard to create an excellent experience for myself and my 85-year-old father. The service was top quality from top to bottom. Roy, the owner picked us up at our hotel and his wife was on the beach to greet us when we got there. They were also there when we returned from a full day of fishing and Roy returned us to our hotel. We had a great day of fishing, and you can't go wrong with Capullo Sportfishing. Every star is earned.
