Fishing in San Jose Del Cabo

The charming town of San Jose del Cabo overlooks the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock here each year to enjoy the beaches and angling opportunities. Fishing charters in San Jose del Cabo are what dreams are made of, and you won’t want to miss out during your visit. Settle in for an adrenaline-pumping experience that will make your holiday unforgettable!

Within just a few miles from shore, you can find Snappers, Groupers, Yellowtails, and the exotic Roosterfish! Even Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi come close to shore, favoring the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, so you can land some delicious meat.

Head a little further out, and you’ll witness sights you could only dream of.  Numerous banks and underwater ledges make these fishing grounds a Billfish paradise, with Sailfish, Swordfish, and three types of Marlin on the menu. Be careful, though, as you may end up hooking a fearsome Shark!

With such a range of fishing grounds right on the town’s doorstep, you can fill the boat on a trip as short as four hours. These trips are popular with families and beginners, while avid anglers prefer the chance to head to the deep. Spend upwards of eight hours on the waters and head to the deep seas, where you can go after that trophy catch.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler will need a sportfishing license to cast a line here, but most San Jose del Cabo fishing charters actually provide it for you. Catch and release rules aren’t as strict as in the US, although most captains prefer to release Billfish for conservation purposes. In any case, heading out with a professional captain will ensure that you’re fishing within the law.

If your new year's resolution is to catch the biggest fish of your life, you're starting things well visiting San Jose Del Cabo. Marlin are always here and there are plenty of guides to get you on one... or ten!

February

Spend the day battling huge Striped Marlin offshore then head back to town to enjoy amazing live music at the San Jose Jazz Weekend. Things don't get much better than this!

March

The Fiesta de San Jose celebrates the town's patron saint in style, with two full weeks of festivals, processions, music, and dancing. If it gets too much, you can always escape offshore for more Marlin!

April

April iss a great month to head into the Sea of Cortez in search of food fish. Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, and Yellowtail are all in season and are biting like crazy on the reefs and banks.

May

Baja California Sur's inshore action explodes in May. Roosterfish, Snook, Jacks, and Mackerel can all be caught this time of year. Jump aboard a local panga and head out in search of remote beaches.

June

The Stars & Stripes Striped Marlin Tournament signals the start of the real big game action. Sure, you can find Billfish all year round here, but from now on you've got four at once!

July

Black Marlin have finally caught up with their Blue and Striped Cousins, and all three species are on fire offshore. You've also got Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna. Fish on!

August

The first of the Bisbees Tournament Series kicks off at the beginning of August with the East Cape Offshore. The series brings together the world's best anglers to compete for millions of dollars in prizes!

September

As the year goes on, the big game bite just gets better and better. Inshore, things are just as good, with some of the biggest Snook and Roosterfish you'll ever see in your life.

October

The Bisbees Black & Blue and Los Cabos Offshore Fishing Tournaments dominate the Cabos. You'll be lucky to find a hotel, let alone a fishing charter. It's well worth checking out if you're in town, though.

November

The Bisbees may be done for the year, but tournament season isn't over quite yet! The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament keeps the action going, with huge hookups and serious competition.

December

December is possibly the best time to visit San Jose Del Cabo. Every major gamefish is on form and the temperatures are low enough to enjoy the action. Take your pick and enjoy!

Keep an open mind, don't let what you want to catch, versus what you do catch determine the quality of time on the water. Because, remember, its all about the tug!

Understand the basics of a sea rod and how to reel in a fish, otherwise expect a long trip with no fish. Captain can help you out with reeling it in, but may not know enough English to explain the concepts if you are a complete beginner.
