Fishing in Santa Rosa Beach

Situated between Destin and Panama City, Santa Rosa Beach is the perfect place for a quiet getaway. You’ll hit the same fishing grounds, with the added benefit of pristine beaches and fine dining that make this town so special. It’s no surprise, then, that Santa Rosa Beach fishing charters are in hot demand.

The town looks out onto Choctawhatchee Bay, meaning you’re already on some prime inshore fishing grounds. Year-round, you can get your fill of Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Sheepshead, Ladyfish, Black Drum, and more! Come in summer, and you can even target Tarpon. Alternatively, you can follow a guide along the Choctawhatchee River and engage in some Bass fishing that’s unrivalled all over Florida!

With the Gulf of Mexico but a short drive away, it’s no surprise that saltwater fishing reigns supreme. Take a charter out of nearby Grayton Beach and head to the productive reefs. Here, you’ll find prized Red Snapper, Gag Grouper, Cobia, Amberjack, Triggerfish, Mackerel, and more.

And that’s not all! The deep waters are near the coastline here, so you can take advantage of deep sea fishing. Go up against Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, as well as plenty of Billfish, and live out your Florida Panhandle fishing dreams!

There’s something for everyone in Santa Rosa Beach. Trips can last as little as a couple of hours inshore, with nearshore trips lasting around 6 hours. Deep sea adventures will require at least a full day on the water, but that just means you’d better make the most of it!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re on a Santa Rosa Beach fishing charter, your license will be covered. However, you’ll need to get your own if you’re hitting the river. Other than that, going out with a professional guide will make sure you’re fishing within the law.

Santa Rosa Beach Fishing Seasons

January

January is the perfect time to explore the shallow waters inshore. Redfish will be biting vigorously in Choctawhatchee Bay while the river will be bustling with StRipers and Sunshine Bass.

February

Winter fishing continues, with the best bite happening inshore. Try your luck at Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Sheepshead or head to the river for something different, as you see off the winter blues.

March

The action is heating up, with some new species coming to town. Add Flounder and Mackerel to your list inshore, while river fishing continues to be promising. You can also head out to the reefs in search of early Cobia.

April

Try sight fishing for Cobia or snag one while trolling for Mackerel. Down below, the reefs are bustling with Snapper and Grouper. Ask your captain which species are legal to keep and bring home some dinner!

May

It’s the beginning of Tarpon season here on the Emerald Coast. You’ll see anglers hunting the Silver King in all sorts of styles along the beaches. Offshore, you can reel in Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, and more.

June

June is all about variety here in Santa Rosa Beach. Head to the river for some excellent Bass fishing or stick to the saltwater scene for a catch that could be anything from Red Snapper to Tarpon.

July

Summer fishing is still on full throttle, with your choice of Florida’s most popular game fish. Cruise the beach for Tarpon, fish the reefs for Grouper, or troll offshore for Kingfish, Mahi, and more.

August

It’s the hottest time of the year, with average temperatures soaring above 90°F. Come cool off on the water, fishing for big game prizes offshore or collecting plenty of tasty treats on the reefs.

September

Summer crowds along the Emerald Coast might be thinning out by autumn, but the waters are far from empty! Every species is biting ferociously and many are legal to keep at this time of year.

October

This time of year is all about Bull Redfish in Choctawhatchee Bay. Catch yourself a real bruiser and bring home some bragging rights. Hook a Speckled Trout and Flounder while you’re at it for an Inshore Slam!

November

Striped Bass and Sunshine Bass will be moving back into the lower portion of the river as winter approaches. You can expect more awesome fishing in the bay and on the nearshore reefs.

December

Come catch yourself a holiday treat! Some of the tastiest fish are biting at this time of year, including Flounder, Redfish, and Grouper, so don't miss out on your last chance to get out on the water.
