Fishing in St. Simons

Coastal Georgia is dotted with numerous islands perfect for an angling getaway, and St. Simons Island is one of them. As one of the Golden Isles’ largest barrier islands, St. Simons is a true fishing paradise. Be it an inshore or offshore adventure, St. Simons fishing charters promise to take you where the fish are biting.

Speaking of fish, the island's fisheries are brimming with different potential catches. Blessed with a bay, sound, inlet, and deep blue waters, St. Simons is home to numerous underwater celebrities such as Redfish, Black Drum, Tarpon, Snook, Permit, Sharks, King Mackerel, Cobia, Bluefish, Snappers, Groupers, Mahi Mahi, and many others.

With a plethora of species under its umbrella, St. Simons Island is a year-round fishing playground. You can cast your line whenever you want and a fish will grace the end of it. Some species, however, follow a season. Cobia, for example, are available from March to October, whereas Bluefish are up for grabs between May and February.

To secure a brag-worthy story, team up with a St. Simons fishing charter operator. Their local insight is crucial when deciding when, where, and how to pursue your trophy catch. Regardless of whether you want to go on a half day surf casting trip or a full day deep sea fishing adventure, the expertise of a local captain is invaluable.

Rules & Regulations

If you're 16 or older and plan to fish on your own, you'll need to purchase a valid fishing license before you can wet your line in these waters. In case you're angling with a certified St. Simons fishing charter operator, you don't have to worry about the license as your captain will take care of it.

St. Simons Fishing Seasons

January

The start of the year is a very good time for inshore and nearshore fishing, as you’re very likely to encounter Bull Redfish, Black Seabass, and Sheepshead.

February

If you love sight fishing, St. Simons is a paradise for you this time of year. Find a skiff and get to work! Schools of Redfish still abound in the flats.

March

The water temperature returning to the mid-sixties means we can expect Tripletail and Cobia to make an appearance soon. Switching from the flats to creeks is a good idea.

April

Sharks are due to make an appearance in the southern waters near Jekyll Island. If you want to take a crack at a Blacktip, this is your chance.

May

This is when it starts getting really hot, so bear in mind that you’ll have the best results if you start fishing as early as you can. Redfish, Trout, and Flounder are the main inshore biters.

June

Come summer, expect to find migratory Kingfish around wrecks, along with Cobia and Snapper. A battle with a Kingfish is hard-fought, but you’ll be back for more in no time.

July

It’s still too early for serious Tarpon fishing, so most anglers will prefer sticking to the shell beds and creeks near St Simons Sound. Delicious Flounder abound!

August

Tarpon season is upon us! Going after the Silver King is very popular, so make sure to book your trip well in advance. It’s also not rare to nab a large Shark as an added bonus.

September

Huge Bull Redfish move into coastal waters sometime in early September, to the delight of local anglers. They can be found all over the coast, from Little St Simons to Jekyll Island.

October

Two things are of importance in October. The first is Georgia White Shrimp, which anyone visiting the Golden Isles needs to try. The second is the fact you can catch 50–100 fish on a good day.

November

Barring extraordinary weather conditions, Redfish and Trout fishing should be booming this time of year. Have you ever seen 50 Redfish clumped up in mere inches of water? You can now.

December

As the year draws to an end, the water temperature should remain in the 40–50°F range. Local anglers know that you should come after a cold front passes over to get the best fishing.
