Fishing in Surf City

Planning an inshore trip? Itching to hunt for your next trophy? Whatever you’re after, you’re in safe hands with Surf City fishing charters. Nestled right in the middle of Topsail Island, Surf City features a prolific inshore fishery, as well as access to the Atlantic Ocean.

The calm, protected waters inside the barrier island offer plenty of excitement. Inshore, you’ll find year-round populations of Red Drum hiding in the creeks and flats. Chasing these, along with Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum, and Flounder is always fun, no matter your age or skill level.

To expand your list of targets, try heading nearshore. A few miles off the beach, you can go trolling for Spanish and King Mackerel, Bonito, or False Albacore. Alternatively, hit the reefs and wrecks, and fish for Black Seabass, Grouper, or Sharks.

For those looking to scratch some pelagics off their bucket lists, the Gulf Stream is the place to go. During wintertime, North Carolina’s offshore waters turn into a world-famous Bluefin Tuna fishery. Over summer, Billfish migrate along the East Coast, making it a great time to fulfill your sportfishing dreams!

Half day trips will allow anglers to explore the inshore or nearshore grounds, while offshore fishing trips require more time. Surf City charter captains often like to pick up their guests at Soundside Park, giving them a great starting point for inshore trips.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing aboard a charter will save you the effort of getting a fishing license, as the captain will have you covered. Anglers aged 16 or older who are looking to fish from a beach, pier, or their own boat will need a valid North Carolina fishing license.

Surf City Fishing Seasons

January

During winter, you’ll often find Red Drum, Trout, and Black Drum hiding in the marsh. Miles offshore, it's Bluefin Tuna season! If you're planning on battling one of these monsters, now's the time.

February

It’s still a good time to be fishing for Bluefin Tuna in the Gulf Stream. Close to shore, you’ll be catching Spotted Seatrout and Red Drum. You can also see some Whiting in the surf.

March

Fishing the nearshore reefs and wrecks could put you some on Black Seabass and Porgy this time of year. Offshore, the Bluefin Tuna season will soon be ending.

April

A few miles off the beach, Bonito and False Albacore are showing up in larger numbers. Inshore, the Spotted Seatrout bite should be heating up as the water gets warmer.

May

If the weather is warm, try trolling for Spanish Mackerel along the beaches. Or head nearshore and try fishing for smaller King Mackerel, False Albacore, and more.

June

With the beginning of summer, King Mackerel make their way closer to shore. Trolling for Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish is also a good option, while bottom fishing could hook you up with some Black Seabass and Snapper.

July

If you’re looking to hunt a Marlin, grab the opportunity while they’re migrating along the Gulf Stream. Or try trolling for Mahi Mahi around the 20-mile range. Inshore, you can hook into Red Drum and Trout.

August

Flounder are showing up in bigger numbers, but make sure to check the regulations before you go fishing. You can also try trolling along the beach for Spanish Mackerel.

September

The recreational Flounder season is usually open around September. This means it’s prime time to be harvesting these delicious flatfish. Nearshore, Spanish Mackerel are still biting.

October

The Spotted Seatrout bite is picking up as the waters cool down. Larger numbers of Redfish can be found anywhere from the local creeks to the inlets.

November

Trolling in the 12–15 mile range is a good option if you’re keen on catching some Spanish or King Mackerel. If you’re eager to put some fish in the cooler, try hitting the nearshore structure for Black Seabass.

December

In the Gulf Stream, big Bluefin Tuna are starting to show up once again, and bottom fishing for Grouper and Snapper is typically productive. Inshore, try sight fishing for Red Drum or targeting Spotted Seatrout.
