Wanchese is the business end of Roanoke Island, and that business is catching fish. Skilled anglers can stay out longer to take on big Bull Reds and more. Most species are best in spring and fall, but there’s plenty of action year-round.
Head out into the ocean and things really heat up. The wrecks offer up Seabass, Tilefish, Cobia, Mackerel, and Bluefish. But head offshore to the Gulf Stream, and Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Marlin are around all summer long! Up for a real challenge? Brave the colder weather to take on Bluefins weighing over 500 pounds! This is one of the best Bluefin Tuna fisheries in the country, so spend upwards of eight hours on the water and go after that trophy!
If fighting huge fish isn’t tough enough, take on other anglers in a local tournament! The biggest event is the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament in nearby Manteo, but there are lots of smaller ones, too. Wanchese fishing charters will even help you prepare for them! Rules & Regulations
Wanchese fishing charters include licenses for everybody on board, so that's one less thing to worry about. However, many species such as Flounder, Cobia, and Seabass have strict closed seasons which may change annually. Your captain will have up-to-date info on every species, and will make sure you stick to the rules during your trip.
