From fishing for Striped Bass, Bluefish and Fluke in the Long Island Sound to Shark and Tuna fishing offshore from Montauk, saltwater fishing in New York is very diverse. Visitors to New York City can be in with a chance of a big game frenzy close to home by hooking a Mako or Thresher Shark within sight of the city’s waterfront. At the same time, fishing for your dinner is just as accessible - there are six species of Flounder alone that call the waters around Long Island home! Freshwater anglers don’t have to look far for an experience that is just as rewarding. Lake Erie’s waters hold good numbers of Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Salmon, and Lake Trout, while Lake Ontario is particularly famous for its Salmon fishing, with Chinook Salmon being the largest and most commonly caught species. New York’s smaller lakes are no less exciting. In fact, four of the top 50 lakes rated by Bassmaster are in New York State. Places such as Lake George are home to a huge number of species, including Bass, Trout, Pike, Walleye and Muskies.
Rules & Regulations
While fishing licenses are required for all anglers in the state, anglers fishing aboard a registered charter vessel do not need to purchase a New York Fishing License.
