Fishing in Tillamook

Oregon’s Tillamook has a lot going for it. This city is located right on the shoreline of Tillamook Bay, one of the most productive fisheries in Oregon. And beyond Tillamook Bay? The mighty Pacific Ocean lies in wait – and plenty of angling opportunities! All you have to do to experience them is hop aboard one of the many Tillamook fishing charters on offer.

Five rivers feed into Tillamook Bay and mix with the saltwaters of the Pacific Ocean, leading to a world-class brackish fishery. Because of this, an adventure onto the bay could see you hooking into anything from Chinook and Coho Salmon, to White Sturgeon, to Rainbow Trout. When you tire of the angling action available, you can then explore these waters for Crabs and Clams. The magic of fishing in Tillamook is that there really is something for everyone!

Choosing the perfect Tillamook fishing trip depends on what you want to catch. Crabbing is good year-round and makes for a perfect family-friendly activity. Trips usually start at a few hours on the bay’s shallow waters, with full day options also available. Beginners can opt for a half day introduction to these waters. More experienced anglers will want to head out for a full day. This gives you plenty of time to chase those trophy fish!

You’ll find local guides dotted all around the bay’s shoreline, offering both fishing and crabbing trips. Crabbing charters are especially popular in the summer months around Area G, and most clamming guides can be found in the upper bay. Traditional rod ’n’ reel fishing charters can be found in these areas, and everywhere in between!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers age 12 and above will need a valid fishing license to cast a line in Tillamook. If you’re going crabbing, you’ll need a Shellfish harvesting permit too.

Tillamook Fishing Seasons

January

Start off your year by targeting some prehistoric beasts. Yep, Sturgeon fishing in Tillamook is seriously productive in January! Rainbow Trout are also biting, and if you’d like to go crabbing, this is the time to do it.

February

The weather is still pretty dreary, but Rainbow Trout are happy to gulp down your bait. Sturgeon are very active, especially if there’s been a lot of rain. Crabbing and clamming opportunities are hot, too.

March

Spring is slowly arriving, which means that clamming is at its peak. Lingcod and Rainbow Trout are popular catches in March, not to mention colossal Sturgeon.

April

Targeting Lingcod in the waters of Tillamook Bay is popular during April especially with the Sturgeon bite slowing down. Luckily, the Chinook and Coho Salmon spring runs are just around the corner!

May

Come to Tillamook Bay to get a taste of excellent Chinook Salmon fishing action! The spring Salmon run is at its peak, which means you can easily reel in big 30-pounders. Clamming is also excellent in May.

June

The weather is gorgeous, you can smell summer in the air, and the Chinook bite is solid throughout June. Lingcod are active and voracious in the bay as usual.

July

The hot summer months usually mean that the fishing action around Tillamook is slowing down, and that’s the case in July. You can still find Rainbow Trout, Lingcod, and some Chinook and Coho Salmon.

August

In August, you can feel fall approaching, which means the Salmon run isn't far away! You’ll find more and more Chinook and Coho Salmon in the waters of the bay, as well as Lingcod and Rainbow Trout.

September

The fall Salmon run is upon us and fishing is nothing short of glorious! Chinook are the superstars of the show, and they come in healthy sizes of 30+ pounds. Fish on!

October

Head out to Tillamook Bay and its tributaries to chase Coho, Chinook, and other Salmon species. Crabbing is also popular right now, so don’t forget to set up a few crab pots.

November

November is one of Tillamook's most productive months when it comes to fishing. Salmon, Sturgeon, Rainbow Trout, Lingcod, Crabs, and Clams are all abundant and there for the taking.

December

Coho and Chinook Salmon may be departing, but Sturgeon are back and biting all through the bay. If you decide to do some crabbing and clamming in December, chances are you’ll have great success.

Austin is a really wonderful captain, super friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We had some rough luck (as did all the other boats that morning) but Captain didn’t let up and we fished until we slammed a big ol’ chinook. We may have been the only ones on the Bay to walk away with a fish that day. Easy launch, easy fishing, beautiful scenery, great conversation. Wish I had brought beer and a raincoat. Thank you Austin for a terrific trip, I’ll give you a call next time I’m in town.

Austin took my wife and I out on the Nehalem river for my wife and I’s first anniversary. Took a little bit to find the big King we were looking for but ended up landing a beautiful 30lb Chinook. Austin’s boating and fishing ability showed and he made sure we had a wonderful day. Looking forward to another round.

This man was willing to teach and help as much as he could and when no one else on the river was catching anything he made sure we at least got a fish, we knew it was spring season and we might not get anything but he was passionate enough to make it happen for us and made my trip up to Oregon something very special. Thank you man

My husband, sister, two kids (5 and 7) and I had a great time on the water with Kyle! We put out crab pots and caught a bunch—my kids have been telling anyone who will listen that “We caught 14 crabs!!” And the adults had so much fun cooking and eating them later that day. Thank you Kyle for an unforgettable experience.
