Fishing in Port Isabel

Head out on a Port Isabel fishing adventure and see what this stunning historic town has to offer. Previously drenched in legends of pirates and hidden treasures, today it’s a quaint fishing village with access to some of the richest waters in Texas. The shallow Laguna Madre offers incredible inshore fishing opportunities, while the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico will give you a real adrenaline boost!

Inshore, you’ll find the crystal clear waters of Laguna Madre both a joy to look at and full of fish you can go after. Redfish, Flounder, Trout, Tarpon, Snook, Sheepshead, and many more await your bait. A half day trip is a great way to explore these waters and get familiar with the fishery, as well as to spend some quality time with your family in nature.

If you’re a more adventurous angler, and you’re looking to hook some deep sea monsters, the Gulf is a short boat ride away! The deep offshore waters hide creatures like Snapper, Grouper, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna. You can explore them on a full day trip, or even an extended full day trip if you want to have some rod-bending action.

Port Isabel is a fishing town first and foremost, so it’s no wonder that you can find charters everywhere you go. Just head on down to the docks and take your pick of the bunch! South Padre Island is right across from the Queen Isabella Causeway, providing you with even more options.

Rules & Regulations

When fishing in Port Isabel, you’ll be following Texas state law. This means that everyone age 17 and over needs to have a fishing license, regardless of whether or not you’re fishing on your own or with a fishing charter.

Port Isabel Fishing Seasons

January
Focus on Redfish in January and you won't regret it for a second – the waters are teeming with them. Trout are more picky than usual, try tempting them with spoons and jigs.
February
Redfish and Trout fishing is still good, don't miss the chance to catch as many as you can. The weather is getting hotter, and so is the fishing.
March
Flounder and Trout are on the rise, while fishing for Redfish can be less productive than previous months. Inshore fishing is the name of the game in March.
April
You'll be searching for Speckled Trout near shore and Redfish on the flats. Black Drum fishing is excellent. April brings more action offshore – Blue Marlin is possible with some luck.
May
May is all about inshore action – the shallow waters of the bay are filled with Speckled Trout and Redfish. Tarpon are also making their first appearance – catch them if you can.
June
Red Snapper season opens – head out to federal waters and bag your personal best. Bottom fishing and battling Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, and Mahi Mahi is a must.
July

Red Snapper is still going strong, along with Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Tuna, and Wahoo offshore. Inshore fishing is all about Tarpon, and catching them on the fly will be unforgettable.

August
The beginning of August is reserved for the Texas International Fishing Tournament – test your angling skills against others. Reds are waiting for you inshore, while Tuna, Mahi, Wahoo, and Amberjack prowl the offshore fishing grounds.
September
September is all about Flounder fishing on the flats. But that doesn't mean that Reds, Specks, Snook, and Tarpon are slowing down. Snapper fishing is still hot, hot, hot.
October
October can be very productive and diverse when it comes to the species you can catch. The sky's the limit with Tuna offshore and Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Snook inshore.
November
The weather is getting colder, but fishing is still hot. November is all about fishing inshore for Reds or offshore for Yellowfin Tuna – just choose your game, and anything's possible.
December
Colder weather will usually lead anglers to stay inshore, but that doesn't mean less action. Trout, Redfish, and Black Drum can be amazing this time of the year.
