Fishing in Seattle

Situated on a narrow piece of land between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, the Emerald City features amazing fishing on either side. The waters around it are famously calm, as the sound is sheltered from ocean swells. With this in mind, Seattle fishing charters cater to all kinds of anglers, whether you’re looking for a family outing or want to beat your personal best.

Around these parts, Salmon will be your main targets. Throughout the year, they race across the narrow inlets and bays that form Puget Sound. In terms of species, you’ll chase after Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Chum, as well as Pink Salmon that only spawn on odd years.

The Salmon season can start as early as January, as long as regulations allow. During winter months, you’ll get to fish for juvenile Chinook, also called Blackmouth. The Salmon frenzy hits its peak in July and August, when you’ll have your best shot at reeling in mature King Salmon or the dazzling Coho.

Of course, there’s plenty of other fish to catch. Puget Sound is an excellent Flounder fishery and also holds delicious Lingcod. If you decide to fish Seattle’s lakes and rivers instead, you can expect to hook into Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout, as well as Perch, Bass, and more.

You can find Seattle charter captains scattered along the city’s marinas. Half day trips are great for families and they’ll give you a decent taste of the fishery. Opt for a longer trip, and you’ll be in for even more excitement.

Rules & Regulations

In Washington, anglers aged 15 or older are required to get a fishing license. If you’re fishing in Puget Sound, you’re going to need to get a saltwater permit. Otherwise, you’ll need a freshwater license before you can fish any of the local rivers or lakes.

Seattle Fishing Seasons

January

Ring in the new year with bragging rights after landing one of Seattle’s hardest fighters: winter “Blackmouth” Salmon. The peak season for this fish is just getting underway, so grab a hot cup of joe and have at it!

February

Temperatures hover between 38 and 51°F in February. Bundle up and head out on the water. If the Salmon are biting, chances are you’ll work up a sweat in no time.

March

Winter Chinook are still biting vigorously in early spring. For more variety, try your luck with Flounder and Squid or head to the lakes and rivers for Trout, Bass, and more.

April

Average temperatures are on the rise, reaching up to 59°F on a good day. Meanwhile, the winter Chinook season is winding down. Most years, Seattle’s Salmon are closed for harvesting by the end of the month.

May

Salmon may be off the menu in May, but some new opportunities are opening up. Lingcod open to harvest, joining Flounder just in time for the summer bottom fishing frenzy.

June

With average temperatures reaching as high as 70°F, it’s a great time to be out on the water. The season for Lingcod is short and sweet here in Seattle, usually closing half way through the month.

July

Chinook and Coho Salmon are back on the scene in Puget Sound, followed by Pink Salmon in odd years. Fishing for these prizes may only be catch and release, depending on the year and regulations.

August

You’ll find great fishing everywhere you turn in August. Hit the sound or test your fly fishing skills in the rivers. With only a few days of rain forecast, be sure to take advantage of this weather!

September

Coho Salmon reach their peak in September. Dungeness Crab is open to harvest until Labor Day, giving you all the more reason to see what’s biting at the bottom.

October

Coho Salmon are still biting in the sound, and you’ll start seeing Blackmouths toward the end of the month. The peak season for lake fishing has passed, but there’s still time to catch Salmon in the rivers.

November

Depending on the year, Salmon quotas may already fill up by November. If not, you’ll get the chance to reel in some juvenile Chinook. Otherwise, head out and fish for Flounder or set out the crab traps.

December

Seattle’s charter boats are still running at full throttle in winter. Those who can brave the cold can reel in Flatfish, or go crabbing. Even Salmon may be in the cards, if the season isn’t closed.
