Fishing in Durham Region

If you're in the Toronto area and want to try your angling luck off the beaten path, why not go fishing in Durham? This region offers equally good fishing opportunities as the provincial capital, only without the crowds. Add to that easy access to several excellent waterways like Lake Simco and Lake Scugog, and you’ve got a winning combo.

The ever-productive Lake Ontario is the most popular fishing destination with its abundant supplies of Chinook, Coho, and Atlantic Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Pike, and Walleye. Trolling for any of these species will probably result in an action-packed day on the water. In case you prefer fishing from the shore, you can expect lots of Bass, Carp, and Catfish.

When you’re in the mood for a change, head to Lake Simcoe, where you can get your fill of Perch, Whitefish, Lake Trout, and Walleye. Ice fishing action is particularly good, and anglers from all over the region flock here in the winter months. If you decide to give Lake Scugog a try, you can expect good amounts of Bluegill, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, and Perch.

The good news is that wherever you go in the Durham region, there will probably be a professional guide to take you out. You’ll mostly find half day and full day expeditions, and some charters also offer shared trips, which are more affordable, but you’ll be sharing the boat with other people.

Some of the best locations to find a fishing charter include Whitby, Bowmanville, and Newcastle.

Rules & Regulations

Both resident and non-resident anglers need to have a fishing licence and an Outdoors Card before they start fishing. Bear in mind that you need to buy the Outdoors Card first, and then acquire the appropriate licence. If you plan on fishing for one day only, you don’t need an Outdoors Card, but you still need a special one-day fishing licence.

Durham Region Fishing Seasons

January
Don’t let the cold dissolve your fishing resolve! Grab your ice fishing gear and hit Lake Ontario for a variety of species, including Yellow Perch, Pike, Walleye, and more.
February
If you’re looking for a change of scenery but you’d still like to do enjoy ice fishing, head to Lake Simcoe for a fun fishing weekend. You can expect anything from Lake Trout and Walleye to good-sized Perch on the line.
March
The temperatures are slowly rising, but the ice is still there, so it’s a good idea to fish smaller bodies of water like Lake Scugog. There’s plenty of fish to target, and Perch, Crappie, and Walleye are at the top of the list.
April
April marks the return of Salmon and charters that target them. Hit Lake Ontario in the second half of the month, and you just might land some good Chinook and Coho.
May
Salmon fishing is still going strong, and anglers from all over are coming to Lake Ontario to hook their Salmon trophy. You can also target Lake, Rainbow, and Brown Trout in the lake’s shallows.
June
If you’d like to experience some of the best fishing in Durham, June is probably one of the most productive months. Whether it’s Walleye, Salmon, and Trout on Lake Ontario or Largemouth Bass on Lake Scugog, you’ll have a great time.
July
Look for Trout in deeper waters of Lake Ontario, or cast your line from the shore and see what will bite. Catfish, Bass, and Carp are all in the cards. Fly fishing for Trout is superb this time of year.
August
Spend some time on the water in August, you won’t regret it. Fish for Bass, Trout, and Walleye, and then, when you need a break, jump in the water and cool off. That way, you’ve got the best of both worlds!
September
Come September, and you can expect Coho and Chinook Salmon in great numbers in Lake Ontario. Anglers who are looking for a trophy love fishing this time of year, because there are some real lunkers swimming around.
October
It’s getting colder out there and the weather is getting more unpredictable, but that doesn’t stop passionate fishermen from going out on the water. Trout are biting, and so are Salmon, Bass, Walleye, Perch – basically, anything you’d like.
November
When temperatures drop in November, some charters are closed for the year, while others are getting ready for the upcoming ice fishing season. Walleye, Pike, Perch, and Bass are all there for the taking.
December
