Fishing in Choctawhatchee Bay

Northeast of the “Luckiest Fishing in the World,” the Choctawhatchee Bay fishing scene is nothing short of superb. It’s one of the Florida Panhandle’s best inshore fishing grounds, and offers brackish waters, flats, wrecks, and much more to explore. Come year-round and discover the riches of fishing on offer here, and you’re sure to want to return for more!

Redfish and Trout are the two ubiquitous fish here. Whenever you come, you can find one of these exciting and delicious creatures at the end of your line, wherever you go. Hit the flats, bridges, and even the bayous, and you’re sure to get your hands on these beauties.

Come summertime, and Spanish Mackerel come to the fore, along with Pompano, Sharks, and even Tarpon. In winter, Flounder and Sheepshead make for a warming dinner, with “Bull” Redfish stealing the show in fall. There literally isn’t a bad time to come.

The beauty of fishing here is that you’re just a stone’s throw from shore, so a trip as short as a couple of hours can yield great rewards. Beginners are welcome to test the waters, while pros can fish all day long, if they wish.

You’re sure to find a tailored Choctawhatchee Bay fishing charter wherever you look around the shores. Explore the rivers from Port Washington, the Hogtown Bayou from Santa Rosa Beach, or be in with a chance to hunt some reef fish out of Destin and Fort Walton Beach – take your pick, and away you go!

Rules & Regulations

When fishing with a charter, your saltwater license is covered. If you feel like exploring the Choctawhatchee River, too, then you’ll need to get a freshwater license. We suggest that you get in touch with your captain before traveling, and they’ll let you know what you need and what’s biting.

Choctawhatchee Bay Fishing Seasons

January

Choctawhatchee Bay offers up excellent year-round fishing, so start things off in the best way by indulging in some top angling action. Flounder, Sheepshead, and Redfish can be found pretty much all over.

February
Cooler waters mean that Flounder and Redfish can be targeted close to shore. If you’re lucky, you might encounter some Snapper species around the bay’s underwaters structures, too, so get your fill of tasty fish!

March

Sheepshead are back in full force, with the South Pass jetties offering up an abundance of this species. Redfish are on offer all through the bay, and the Trout fishing is back with a bang.

April

Things start really heating up, in the water if not above. The “grand slam” of Flounder, Spotted Seatrout, and Redfish can be found. Try your luck around the underwater structures, and you might hook yourself a Grouper.

May

Fishing the jetty? You’re likely to reel in Spanish Mackerel, or even Shark species. The flats are brimming with Spotted Seatrout and Redfish, and Sheepshead and Black Drum can be found in deeper waters.

June

June sees the temperature and fishing on offer really heat up! Spotted Seatrout, Redfish, Flounder...it would be easier to say what isn’t on offer. If you’re fishing in Destin, book early – this is when charters start to fill up!

July

Charters are getting busier and busier, so make sure you book well in advance. If you can, opt for early morning trips to beat the crowds! Bull Redfish and trophy-sized Trout are on offer, and anglers are flocking to them.

August

If you can handle the heat, August is the perfect month to hook into huge, tasty table fare, with Bull Reds and Gator Trout both on offer. School’s out, so expect the waters to be bustling with tourists and families!

September

There's no sign of the weather nor the fishing cooling down, although the fish start to move closer to shore. The flats around Hogtown Bayou are brimming with Redfish, while Trout and Flounder fishing remains strong.

October

October sees the bay bustling again, thanks to the Destin Fishing Rodeo bringing crowds of avid anglers. Fishing remains strong during the month, with Sheepshead, Redfish, and Spotted Seatrout all on offer.

November

The temperature may have dropped, but Choctawhatchee Bay’s fishing is still seriously hot. The waters are much quieter, so get ready to explore them and hook anything from Spotted Seatrout to Redfish, to Flounder.

December

The year's coming to a close, but Choctawhatchee Bay’s fishing opportunities remain open. Treat yourself to the best holiday present by hooking a huge Bull Redfish – it may not be traditional, but it'll sure fill you up!
