Fishing in Mustang Island

The Mustang Island fishing scene represents Texas at its finest. The fishing season never stops (although it has its peak in summer) and you can catch plenty of fish no matter what direction you head in. Offering different opportunities for both novices and hard-core anglers, this location truly has something for everyone.

The island is a natural border that separates Corpus Christi Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. This also splits fishing trips into two main types: bay and gulf trips. Half day trips in the bay are family favorites – you don’t need to be experienced, the kids have their fun catching the bait, and there’s no choppy water as you’re staying close to shore. The fish you target will be just as tasty as they are exciting, such as Redfish, Flounder, Speckled Trout, or Sheepshead.

For those ready to embrace a rod-bending challenge, there’s nothing better than a full day offshore adventure. Head out to the Gulf and troll for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, or Sailfish. Big game fishing is best in fall. Closer to shore, you’ll find highly-prized Red Snapper, Amberjack, and Cobia.

Whether you start your adventure from Corpus Christi in the south or Port Aransas in the north, you’ll have equally good chances of a great catch. Cast, pull, fill the ice bucket, and then fill your belly with tasty fish!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers 17 and older need to purchase a Texas saltwater fishing license. You can keep only one Redfish over 28 inches. For more than one, you’ll need to purchase the additional Red Drum tag.

Mustang Island Fishing Seasons

January
The beginning of the year is best for bay fishing trips. You’ll have great chances of catching Sheepshead, Speckled Trout, and Black Drum.

February

In February, Black Drum fishing gets even better. If you’re interested in nearshore fishing, you’ll have a blast targeting Mako Shark.

March

The end of winter still offers better bay fishing trips, compared to the Gulf. Target “The Texan Big Three” – Redfish, Flounder, and Speckled Trout.

April
With spring, nearshore fishing trips are getting better. Head out a bit further and target Amberjack, Cobia, and Kingfish.

May

Amberjack and Cobia swim these waters at their full capacity and they could make a great catch. Inshore, you’ll find lots of Redfish and Black Drum.

June

In June, everybody tends to focus on one fish only – Red Snapper. The season is open, so book your spot on time!

July

With the Red Snapper season still open, there’s plenty of action in the Gulf. Catch this prestigious fish and enjoy it for lunch.

August

The peak of summer will take you far offshore, where you can target Mahi Mahi, Blackfin Tuna, and Wahoo.

September

Summer may be almost over but big game fishing is very hot. Find a guide who can take you trolling for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and other offshore species.

October

If you won’t settle for less than a breathtaking trophy, take an offshore trip and target Blue Marlin.

November

There’s something for everyone in November. Offshore fishing trips still offer great catch, while bay trips bring more Redfish, Flounder, and Sheepshead.

December

The end of the year is best spent fishing inshore. You can catch a bunch of Flounder, Black Drum, and Redfish.
