Fishing in Queensland

With its endless sunshine, thousands of kilometres of coastline, and vast territory, Queensland is the epitome of Australian living. Add to that easy access to the prolific Coral Sea, and it’s not hard to figure out why so many anglers love coming to the Sunshine State. Whatever species you’d like to target, whatever technique you prefer, fishing charters in Queensland can put you on the bite.

Premier deep sea fishing is what comes to mind whenever someone mentions Queensland. Among all the A-listers you can catch here, Black Marlin stand out the most. They’re the most prized fish, along with their Blue and Striped cousins. If that’s not enough, Tuna (Yellowfin, Pacific Bluefin, Longtail and Dogtooth) join the fray, along with Giant Trevally and Mahi Mahi.

Queensland is the home of the Great Barrier Reef and the action on the reefs along the coast is indeed great. We’re talking about a slew of Snappers, Coral Trout, Mackerel and Kingfish, all at your disposal. Barramundi and Flathead, the country’s favourite fish, are abundant in the inshore waters, as well as Mangrove Jacks and Tailor.

There are many skippers all over Queensland that organise fishing trips, long and short. From multi-day expeditions to the remote Saumarez Reefs to half day jaunts to the nearby reefs, you can reserve a spot on just about any type of trip you can think of.

Some of the biggest fishing hubs on the continent are in Queensland. Port Douglas, Cairns, Gold Coast and Brisbane all have charter fleets at your service.

Rules & Regulations

One of the many advantages of hitting the water with fishing charters in Queensland is that you don’t need a fishing licence. Still, it’s important to follow the catch limits and closed seasons, so make sure you’re informed before you head out.

Queensland Fishing Seasons

January

Kick-off the year by chasing Blue Marlin in Northern Queensland. Yellowfin Tuna enter their summer peak, and the rest of the Billfish are out and about as well. Barramundi are biting left and right in the shallows too.

February

If you’re in the mood to chase some of the feistiest and hard-fighting fish in the sea, hit Queensland’s bluewater in February and battle Black, Blue, or Striped Marlin. Giant Trevally are on fire this time of year, giving you an excellent reason to hit the reefs.

March

Shallow-water anglers are fighting monster Barramundi and tasty Mangrove Jack in March, while big game chasers go after Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Tuna and Wahoo. The GT bite is still going strong this time of year.

April

Out on the reefs, lucky anglers are pulling in Coral Trout, Snapper, Red Emperor and more. In fact, April is the best time of the year to target Snapper species and come back to shore with fish fillets that can be easily turned into a delicious meal.

May

Reef fishing continues to be excellent as the weather cools down, Marlin aren’t going anywhere and tasty Bonito show up in force in May. Even though the weather is becoming more unpredictable, game fishermen have plenty to do on the water.

June

Just because it’s winter, don’t think for a second that you’ll be bored when you go fishing. Queenfish, Pearl Perch, Coral Trout, Sweetlip Emperor, Red Emperor, Pink Snapper – these are just some of the species you can find on your line.

July

July is the coldest month of the year in Queensland, but temperatures still hit 25ºC during the day. That’s the perfect weather for taking on huge Flathead in Central Queensland’s inlets and estuaries.

August

Northern Queensland is poised and waiting for the first big Black Marlin as winter draws to a close. Yellowfin Tuna action is very good this time of year, and inshore, Barramundi are getting bigger and you can find good Flathead around.

September

Heavy tackle season kicks off in a frenzy of screaming drags at the Australian International Billfish Tournament. This event has been going for over half a century and still draws the sport’s biggest names.

October

Black Marlin are once again the main stars of the show, with “grander” Blacks up for the taking every year. If you don’t feel like venturing far offshore, you can take on landlocked Barras, as well as Brown and Rainbow Trout.

November

More and more Blue Marlin join Black Marlin and Sailfish in the deep waters. If you’re after a Billfish Grand Slam, this is the time of year to try. If you prefer fishing the reefs, worry not, there’s plenty of Snapper and Trevally for the taking.

December

There’s so much to celebrate at the end of the year, including great numbers of Billfish and Tuna prowling the offshore waters. Big and strong Giant Trevally are out and about as well. Closer to shore, make sure you catch a Cobia while they’re still actively biting.

If you want to catch a lot of fish you need to go to the reef and the weather does not always cooperate especially in the winter. The estuary is an experience all by itself. Be patient and enjoy. Fishing is an experience. The catching of actual fish is just a possible outcome of that experience.

Be flexible and ready to change dates if you're planning on taking a trip there anywhere near the wet season. Wind plays a huge factor as-well obviously.

Great boat, fishing gear and guide. Worried about Crocs getting in boat, no chance, nice high sides both in and out, to keep everyone safe and to ensure everyone enjoys their fishing. This estuary fishing experience will show you the unseen part of Cairns that from the car cannot provide, if your reading this, you'll love the experience too!
