Cod Fishing in Canada

Cod fishing in Canada means one of two things: you’re either targeting Pacific Cod in British Columbia or Atlantic Cod in Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island. While they’re closely related, there are some differences in their appearance – Atlantic Cod are typically larger than Pacific Cod and their color varies from gray to red-brown, while Pacific Cod is darker.

Pacific Cod

Pacific Cod are aggressive feeders and aren’t too picky about their food. This makes them an easier target, especially for novice anglers. They are usually found in large schools on the bottom. Even if you’re not targeting them specifically, it’s possible you’ll get them as bycatch while fishing for Halibut.

The best way to catch them is by using cut bait and other smaller fish. Try with scampi-type jigs, herring, and octopus. And aim for more – by using double hook setups you’ll easily catch two fish at the same time.

Atlantic Cod

The famous Cod fishery collapse in 1992 caused the authorities to announce a moratorium on Cod fishing in order to save it from extinction. Since then, only recreational fishermen have been permitted in Newfoundland and Labrador's waters.

If you’re new to fishing, we advise starting with bait-fishing, as it’s a little easier to get the hang of. Another proven method is jigging and this is usually what more experienced anglers prefer. When you’re searching for them, pay attention to water temperature. A rule of thumb is the higher the temperature, the higher the Cod activity. They prefer to stay in colder water during the day, so you’ll find them at the bottom. If you’re targeting them at night, look for shallow, warmer water.

Which Trip to Choose

Fishing guides on the Atlantic side of the country usually target Cod in spring and summer. As fish do not go too far from the coast, you can reach great fishing spots in 20 minutes. Don’t worry if you don’t have a whole day for fishing because even a four-hour trip is long enough to catch Cod.

Fishing guides on the Pacific side can cater to more experienced and hardy anglers. Some of them go after Cod even in winter and the trips can last for several days. If that sounds like too much, five-hour trips are an option as well.

Both Pacific and Atlantic Cod have high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, lots of vitamins, and low mercury levels. Whether you’re looking for a healthy diet or fun angling action, Cod is a great target year round, even in winter. East or west coast – what’s it gonna be?

Bad day to be a fish!

If you're looking for a local knowledgeable guide Dane is your man! My girlfriend and I had a great time! Dane was very friendly and put up with all of our questions! I was able to catch my first ever salmon! He even took a little extra time to get us a ling cod to end the day! Highly recommend this trip to anyone from first timers to seasoned fishermen. Also very helpful with recommending places to pack fish for traveling.

    Good haul

Jeff is a maniacal pirate, who gets the fish to bite with the sheer force of his will. His deck hand and the fish hound "Moose" were professional and made sure we landed as many fish as possible. This trip was a one of a kind experience, with a hearty amount of salmon and cod brought in as well. 10/10. Bring beers!
