Crappie Fishing in Georgia

Crappie
  • Size 0.25 to 0.5lb
  • Food Value Excellent
  • Game Qualities Low
  • Habitats River, Lake

(Pomoxis annularis / nigromaculatus)

In the world of fishing, there are plenty of superstitions, lucky charms, and old wives tales going around. When it comes to  Georgia Crappie fishing, there’s a saying, "When dogwoods bloom, Crappies are shallow." And this saying holds up – when the dogwood trees are blooming, you know it’s time to head to the shallows to fish your fill of Crappie!

In Georgia you can find both Black and White Crappie, which are also locally called Slabs, Goggleye, or Papermouth. These might be small, weighing on average only 1–2 pounds, but they are delicious Panfish to fry!

Where to Fish

These yummy fish can be caught all over Georgia. Locals will each tell you their favorite fishing hole and you’ll never hear the same name come up twice! Pretty much every lake, river, and reservoir has a thriving population of Crappie to fish for.

Some of the best lakes to visit include: Harding, Sinclair, Hartwell, Allatoona, Blackshear, Hamburg, Eufaula, Carlton, Oconee, Seminole, and Juliette. You also have favorites such as Altamaha River and lake Lanier, a huge mountain lake that’s 39,000 acres in size.

Seek out some water with cover and you’ll find Crappie. In clear waters, Crappie can be found in depths up to 20 feet. In murky water, you can catch them just 2 feet from the surface.

What to Expect

On a Crappie fishing trip, you’ll only need 4–5 hours out on the water to catch plenty of fish. This trip is great for the whole family, as for parts of the year you can successfully go trolling and jigging for them.

Spring is the best time to go Crappie fishing in the shallows. By April, you can begin trolling for them. In the summer, head to deepwater waters and use trolling and jigging techniques to catch your fill.

If fishing with a guide, rods and reels will be provided. If bringing your own along, choose a rod that is lightweight, so you can feel the Crappie bite. On a clear sunny day, use a bright reflective bait or live minnows and it won’t be long before your cooler is full or limits are reached!

Everyone over 16 will need to bring along a freshwater fishing license. Don’t forget to pack snacks, drinks, and sunscreen – and you’re ready to fish.

Head over to Georgia for a Crappie fishing trip you’ll never forget!

Weather can be unpredictable. It was very cold and windy this morning, but just a few days ago it was in the 80s. The good news is the gnats arenโ€™t as bad when itโ€™s cold.

The launch is easy to locate. The temperature on the water is about 10 degrees cooler so be prepared if fishing on a chilly day.

Capt stated best times were fall, conditions are unpredictable for this time of year. Cold, rain and wind affected the outcome but we were still able to catch fish with little work.

This was a very good trip for anglers of any skill. Captain Marcus was very helpful in helping us get onto the fish. Using live bait made it pretty easy to tell when we had bites and he was helpful in landing the fish. It was a very good, trip.

Fishing was great and if youโ€™re looking for trophies you might need to check with the professional guides for weather, tide, water temperature, etc., etc., - turns out the fish donโ€™t read the fishing literature!

The fishing was pretty good, but the weather can always make things dicey. Our trip was rescheduled one day because of a big storm coming through the area. One thing no one tells you is to be aware of the sand gnats in early March!

If thereโ€™s rain forecasted that does not mean fish wonโ€™t bite. Get with captain Traub and heโ€™ll put you on some hitters.

Try to book a trip during the peak times for the kind of fish you are targeting. Weather is certainly an important consideration as well. Booking on a week day is probably a good idea as well. There will be less competition for the fishing spots you need to investigate.

Be sure to wear sunglasses, sunscreen, (especially on your face), warm jacket (as the air is cooler when the boat is moving around. Have patience, not everything you catch is a keeper, and you donโ€™t catch everything that tugs on your line. Just go to enjoy being our on the water and everything else is an added bonus.
