Inshore Fishing in Key Largo

The ishore fishing Key Largo offers anglers is as varied as it is awesome. Whether you’re heading out onto the flats, zipping off to the Everglades, fishing Biscayne Bay, or backcountry fishing, the inshore waters of Key Largo are full of non-stop action if you know where to look.

What to Expect

Depending on where you go, you can expect to spend your day on one of two distinct types of boats. Larger groups going to the reefs and shipwrecks will fish from a center console. These can fit up to 6 people and have the added advantage of going faster, so you can fish further out on your trip. These boats offer a dry ride, usually with seating and space for the whole group to fish comfortably.

In the backcountry, bays, and flats, you’ll be on a skiff or bay boat. These are smaller and can have a maximum of 4 people on board. These boats let you get closer to the action and can maneuver into hard-to-reach areas.

Inshore trips are great for targeting species such as Tarpon and Snook. Tarpon break the line in over 60% of cases – although you’re likely to find Tarpon, whether you can reel it in or not will depend on your skills. Evenings are a great time to target Tarpon and will give you that extra advantage when out on the water.

Wherever you decide to fish, you’ll have the opportunity to choose from an eight-hour, six-hour, or four-hour trip. More time means more fish in the cooler.

How to Prepare

Your fishing license will usually be included in the price of the trip if fishing in saltwater, along with the rods, reels, and bait. For inshore freshwater fishing, everyone over 16 will need to buy a fishing license. You’ll likely need to bring along your own snacks and drinks for the day. Be wary of the space on board and leave the bulky coolers in the car. It’s best to wear light breathable layers and non-marking shoes. Don’t forget your camera, non-aerosol sunscreen, and a hat, and you’re good to go.

Be prepared for a great time! Lather up with sunblock, wear polarized sunglasses, wear a hat, bring a towel, enough water to hydrate and prepare for a great time.

Be flexible. Wind came out of nowhere and we had to change our plans. In doing so we still had an incredible time

We were lucky to snag a Wahoo today as it is the end of their season. January is the beginning. So if Wahoo is what you're after, know that is your window.

Talk to your charter and make clear what your expectations are. If they are as good as Underwater Cowboy, they will be upfront and professional.

Patience - the fish are out there and they are biting. Full moon allows the predators to hunt all night so expect slower days when the moon is full, or near full.

Decide if you want to fish the Atlantic Ocean side but make sure it is a calm day or the Florida Bay/ mangrove side which is quieter with different kinds of fish like snook, mangrove snapper sea trout, redfish etc.
