The Great White North’s fishing potential is legendary. From the Great Lakes to Prince Edward and Vancouver Islands in the east and west, respectively, there’s no shortage of where to cast a line. But there’s plenty you should consider before you visit. Thankfully, Canada fishing guides are ready to show you what’s what.

The first thing you’ll want to know is what fish are on offer. Freshwater fisheries offer up a range of Trout depending on where you go. Cutthroat, Brook, and Rainbow Trout inhabit numerous rivers, while bigger Lake and Brown Trout are available in – you guessed it – the lakes. With Walleye, Musky, Pike, Perch, Bass, and even Sturgeon available, you’re in for a treat wherever you go.

In the saltwater realm, things don’t let up either. Flatfish, such as Flounder, inhabit the shallow waters, with their monstrous cousins, “barndoor” Halibut offering up a real test of your strength. Cod, Rockfish, and Lingcod are all popular catches, too, with Tuna showing up in the deeper waters of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

But the real highlight of the Canadian fishing scene is Salmon. Six species of these world-famous fish call this country home, with five species available in British Columbia – Chinook, Coho, Chum, Pink, and Sockeye. The first two are also found in the Great Lakes, along with Atlantic Salmon, which are also available in the west.

Trips take the form of anything you could imagine, pretty much. From short, half-day getaways to the inshore waters or onto the lakes, up to overnight and multiday tours in search of Tuna. Full day trips and above are recommended for experienced anglers, with lodging and fly-in options available, too.

Each Canadian Great Lake is a great place for any freshwater fishing expedition, along with the Fraser, Niagara, and St. Lawrence Rivers. British Columbia and Vancouver Island, in particular, is the place to be for oversized Halibut, with Prince Edward Island offering the best action in the east.

Rules & Regulations

Before casting a line in Canada, you’ll need to purchase a fishing license. These differ depending on which state or province you’re fishing in, so check with the relevant authority to get yours. Regulations on bag and size limits, as well as special permits for certain species also vary. That’s why we suggest heading out with a Canada fishing guide, who’ll keep you on the right side of the law.

January

The start of the year is a great time for fishing in Canada! In Victoria, small Chinook Salmon are abundant, while ice fishing in Ontario promises Lake Trout and more.

February

If you’ve had your fill of ice fishing, set a few Crab traps in the bays of British Columbia, or try your luck fly fishing countless streams for Steelhead and Cutthroat Trout.

March

The ice has yet to thaw on many of Canada’s lakes, so get your last shot at ice fishing. Elsewhere, various creeks and streams hold Trout, Walleye, and more.

April

Anglers can now head to big lakes in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and northern Quebec to enjoy some easy sight fishing for Pike, as the ice finally thaws.

May

Salmon fishing is heating up all over the country, from Quebec to the Great Lakes, to the far reaches British Columbia. Atlantic and Chinook are the ones to catch!

June

The weather is growing fairer by the day, drawing many charter boats to the sea. In BC, anglers can go after Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, and Rockfish.

July

Midsummer is prime time for Sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River. If light tackle action is more your speed, try fishing back east for Pike, Walleye, or Char.

August

Salmon fanatics are living it up on Vancouver Island, where all five Pacific species are biting vigorously. Meanwhile, freshwater anglers can have a blast in lakes and rivers all over the country.

September

Anglers in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island head offshore in search of their next record breaking Bluefin Tuna, as Salmon season is winding down, elsewhere.

October

Bluefin Tuna fishing continues up north, while Steelhead fishing in rivers all over Canada gets underway. Crabbing in British Columbia is excellent at this time of year.

November

Winter is drawing near, and many anglers head to remote rivers for Steelhead fishing. In Ontario, some may still be trolling for Salmon on Lake Superior before the ice sets in.

December

With many lakes frozen over, most anglers find themselves ice fishing or casting lines in small streams. Many charter boats on the coasts are closed for winter.

Dress appropriately and bring gloves. It can get cold out there. Also a rain jacket and hat since there’s no roof on the boat.

I did not see a lot of other boats catching a lot of fish. Few fish per boat. However, we limited with Full Melt Charters in less than 2 hours. Definitely go with this guy!

We had an incredible day with Captain Scott on the waters of Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands! His boat and gear were top-notch, and his knowledge of the area, fishing, and trapping spots made the experience fun and unforgettable. We caught a beautiful Chinook Salmon and a couple others we returned. Including our limit of Prawns. It was an outstanding winter fishing adventure, and we can’t wait to come back for more!

Our trip with Brannen was great. We had 4 hours in the morning and dropped our pots in about 45 minutes and fished for 2-3 hours. We were on fish right away and caught at least 15 fish with 1 big keeper king salmon - about 12 pounds. We also limited on crab - all in mid November.

Johnny and the fishing trip were both exceptional. Fishing was great and the captain was an extraordinary host on the boat. We had our youngest son who hasn't fished much for the big ones on this trip and Johnny took special care in teaching him the ropes of salmon and sturgeon fishing while we fished. We all definitely appreciated all Johnny's efforts and a big shout out from Lance saying thank you! Definitely will be going again!

Captain Jesse was great in particular with my kids (all under 12 yo.). After so many years going fishing, he still shares the excitement when the ‘reel goes crazy’ and a big one is on the hook. He let the kids have some space to really try things out but provides guidance when needed. Thank you, Jesse and keep up the good work. Highly recommended!
