Fishing in Pensacola Beach

Located on the Florida Panhandle barrier island of Santa Rosa, Pensacola Beach has the best access to some of the world’s best fishing grounds. Separating the shallow inshore from the deep offshore waters, it’s also a hub for nearshore reef fishing. Fortunately for you, there are plenty of Pensacola Beach fishing charters ready to take you to discover these productive fisheries!

On a trip as short as a couple of hours, you can discover the wealth of fish on offer in the Santa Rosa Sound or Pensacola Bay. Some anglers choose to spend a full day here, with the prize of “Bull” Redfish and “Gator” Spotted Seatrout on offer year-round. Flounder and Sheepshead make for a delicious supporting cast. But, time your trip right, and you could go after Tarpon, Pompano, and Bluefish, as well.

If you’re looking for a Gulf-side trip, then nothing compares to Red Snapper season here. Come in summer and get your hands on this elusive fish on the reefs, along with plenty of Gag Grouper, Cobia, Amberjack, Kingfish, and Triggerfish. The most popular trips to these hunting grounds last around 6 hours, but you can spend longer on the water to make the most of it.

Finally, the offshore fishing in Pensacola Beach is something to behold. Around 25 miles offshore, you’ll come across some even bigger versions of the species you’ll find nearshore. Head a little further out and spend anywhere from 10 hours to a few days on the water, however, and you’ll be greatly rewarded. Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, and even Billfish will be biting to keep you on your toes.

Pensacola Beach Fishing Seasons

January
With winter temperatures slightly higher on Pensacola Beach than on the mainland, January can be a great time to fish in these parts. Look for False Albacore close to the beaches and test yourself on light tackle.
February
Make the most of the peaceful beaches before the tourist season kicks off on the Panhandle. Inshore fishing can be great fun, along with sight fishing, as you go in search of Bull Redfish and Gator Trout.
March
Late March marks the beginning of the Cobia migration – an event not to be missed! Meanwhile, Pompano, Mackerel, and Sheepshead also start to show up, giving you plenty of options nearshore.
April
The fishing gets better and better as the season kicks off. Cobia fishing off Pensacola Beach peaks in April, while Spotted Seatrout and Redfish are aplenty in the Bay and Sound. Get ready to see in the season in style!
May
King and Spanish Mackerel start to move into Pensacola Bay, adding to already impressive Spotted Seatrout  and Bull Redfish angling opportinities. This is a great time to fish, so don't miss out!
June
Book your charter early to avoid disappointment, as June marks the beginning of peak fishing season in Pensacola Beach. Red Snapper season opens, Kingfish are biting nearshore, and plenty more can be found all over!

July
Inshore fishing takes a backseat as summer arrives. The offshore action is better than ever, with Red Snapper, Kingfish, Amberjack, and small Mahi Mahi being regular catches on the reefs, not to mention in the deep.
August
The hot weather continues, so you'll want to get out on the water just to cool down. Target Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish inshore, with Kingfish loitering in the passes, while reef and offshore fishing doesn't let up!
September
You'll wonder why the crowds start to die down, as the fishing is as good as ever, and the weather is still hot.Target Spanish Mackerel and Pompano to fill your ice box, while Marlin is possible on longer trips.

October
There's no end in sight to the incredible fishing in Pensacola Beach. Go after White Marlin in the deep water, while  inshore fishing is getting exciting again. Bull Redfish and Spotted Seatrout are back in vogue!
November
Warm water species move on as the first cold fronts begin to arrive. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing! All the talk in town is about Flounder, which is migrating in large numbers out to the Gulf. You won't go hungry!
December
December fishing in Pensacola Beach can be quite phenomenal, especially if you're a fan of Bull Redfish. The fish are hungry and are gladly taking bait inshore, along with plenty of other shallow water favorites!
