Fishing in Duck

On the northern tip of the Outer Banks, Duck, NC separates the sheltered shallows of the Currituck Sound and the open expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Duck fishing charters make the most of these waters, tailoring trips for first-timers, sportfishing fanatics, and everything in between.

Inshore charters stay in the sound to target Red Drum, Flounder, Weakfish, Spanish Mackerel, and more. Throw out some live bait and reel in a feast in just a few hours or stay out longer to battle Bull Reds and even Tarpon. Most species are around spring through fall, but the Tarpon bite is best in summer.

Head a little bit further out and you’ll find productive reefs and wrecks swarming with prized fish. Bluefish spend most of the year here, alongside seasonal visitors like King Mackerel, Cobia, and much, much more. You need your biggest cooler on these trips!

Then there’s the bluewater bite. Offshore charters take you to the Gulf Stream to troll for big game species like Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and even Marlin. You can also deep drop for delicious bottom fish like Grouper and Tilefish. Either way, the best time to visit is summer, and you’ll need a full day trip to take on these monsters.

You’ve got plenty of options, so choose your adventure and get ready for the Outer Banks’ incredible angling. Just make sure you book in advance, because boats get very busy in high season.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses are always provided on fishing charters in North Carolina. Species like Flounder and Seabass have strict closed seasons which change regularly, so you should talk to your captain to make sure you’re fishing by the book.

Duck Fishing Seasons

January
With fewer boats in the water, the fishing opportunities are few and far between. Don’t worry, though, as without the tourists, you’ll have the whole of Duck to yourself as you see off those winter blues.
February
Most captains are preparing for the season, so if you want to go fishing, then standing on the beach and casting into the surf may be your best bet. Inshore fishing is fruitful, so try to land a warming dinner.
March
You may need to head south to one of the bigger fishing towns to a fishing charter in March. Spring has sprung, and you can expect plenty of exciting fish in the Gulf Stream.
April
There’s a real sense that the season is upon the Outer Banks as April hits. Nearshore fishing hits its stride, so take your pick from the surf, inshore, or offshore for a thrilling spring fishing trip.
May
The Drum run takes place along the sounds, while Mahi Mahi make their way along the Gulf Stream, giving you the chance to fill the boat with plenty of delicious fish wherever you decide to go.
June
Duck swells as the tourists flock to the beaches and private residences for summer vacation. Book well in advance to make sure that you can take advantage of the pristine beaches.
July
White Marlin and Blue Marlin are out in the Gulf Stream, so it’s the best time of year to go fishing offshore. Put your skills and strength to the test as you battle it out with these monsters.
August
The inshore sounds are brimming with delicious fish in August, while Mackerel bite nearshore and the offshore action is red-hot. Up for a challenge? Sign up for the Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament in Manteo!
September
The season may be coming to a close, but the fishing is as good as ever. Target the pelagics in the deep, King and Spanish Mackerel nearshore, while the usual suspects offer great fishing inshore, too.
October
Despite the change in the weather, there’s no need to run for cover just yet. Combine your fishing trip in Duck, NC with a visit to the famous Duck Jazz Festival and make the most of it all.
November
Inshore fishing is still fruitful, but you’ll be lucky to find a captain to take you out on the water. Try Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hill for the best chance to land some delicious Flounder, Drum, and Trout.
December
With Christmas approaching, the Yuletide Festival lights up Duck, so there’s still plenty of reasons to visit. Most captains will have their boats out of the water, so any fishing must be done from shore.
