Fishing in Portland

If you’re a freshwater angler, then nothing quite beats fishing in Portland, Oregon. This quirky city is located right at the meeting point of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, and boasts a whole host of other smaller waterways. This means one thing – there’s plenty of fish to target!

Salmon are top of many anglers’ wish lists in Portland, and Chinook and Coho varieties are the most popular targets. Chinook kick off the fishing season in March along the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, and stay strong throughout summer. In fall, many anglers head to the waters around the Bonneville Dam for trophy Chinook and Coho. It’s also not uncommon to encounter Sockeye Salmon in the lower Columbia River and its tributaries, especially in summer.

Salmon aren’t all that’s on offer here, though. You can experience two Steelhead runs, taking place during summer and winter in the Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers. The Clackamas River is especially popular for Steelies in winter! Then there’s Portland’s Sturgeon fishing. The Columbia and Willamette Rivers see a steady population of these prehistoric beasts year-round, which means you can catch and release them whenever you visit.

You’ll find a whole host of fishing charters dotted around Portland. Some of the most popular departure points are around the mouth of the Columbia River and at the meeting point of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Local guides offer trips running anywhere from a quick half day out on the water to full day trophy-chasing excursions. You’ll have plenty of options to choose from!

Rules & Regulations

Any angler age 12 and above will need a valid fishing license to cast a line in Portland. If you’re exploring the Columbia River, you’ll also need a Columbia River Basin Endorsement.

Portland Fishing Seasons

January

There’s no shortage of festivities in Portland at the start of the year. When you’ve had your fill of Chocolate Fest, the Reel Music Festival, and  Chinese New Year, head to rivers for some Steelhead action.

February

Winter fishing continues, with Steelhead and Sturgeon putting up spectacular fights in the rivers around Portland. Head back to shore when you’re done and warm up at the Oregon Seafood and Wine Festival.

March

Spring Chinook are here! This is the perfect time to cast a line in the Columbia River and see what the fuss is all about. Meanwhile, the streets will be bustling with St. Paddy’s Day festivities.

April

Average temperatures creep as high as 60°F in April, and the spring fishing continues to heat up, too. Trophy Sturgeon season is just around the corner, as well as the summer Salmon and Steelhead runs.

May

Around this time of year, many fishing guides in Oregon start heading to Astoria and the Bonneville Dam for trophy Sturgeon. Spring Salmon are still biting hard, as temperatures climb toward 70°F.

June

June is full of possibilities, so don’t put all your eggs in one basket! Climb aboard and dabble in trophy Sturgeon fishing, "June Hog" Salmon season, and the start of the summer Steelhead run.

July

Combine angling action with relaxing at one of the many music festivals happening in Portland this month. When you head out on the water, you'll be able to target Sturgeon, Samon, and Steelhead.

August

The famous Buoy 10 fishery opens this month. Any guides who didn’t head to the coast before will likely head there now for world class Chinook and Coho Salmon fishing!

September

By now, the fall Salmon are making their way to Portland, joining the last of the summer Steelhead. Many guides will follow them back home to fish the local rivers through winter.

October

Fall Salmon are still available, along with the last of the trophy Sturgeon near the Bonneville Dam. Portland is full of the Halloween spirit at this time of year, with haunted houses, corn mazes, and more.

November

The first of the winter Steelhead arrive in November, drawing light tackle and fly anglers into the Clackamas, Willamette, and Cowlitz rivers. Portland is kicking off the holiday season with its famous ZooLights display.

December

With the holidays in full swing, Portland is as festive as ever. Anglers slip away from the hustle and bustle for a chance to catch winter Steelhead, Sturgeon, and more.

It depends on rain and how many fish enter river during the run. Also if they start to let netting of drag boats it decreases your chance of a big fish. August to first week of September

To Look on fishingbooker.com to select the right fishing. It was great. Only the way to get a licence+harvest list is too complicated. It is still paper required. I think everything must go digital. Iam a German and I needed to go around to find a place where these papers could be printed out.

We had 3 people on board, one who had fished with Jordan several times before, my son who had not experienced a guided trip before and myself who has been on many guided trips. Jordan put us on the fish. We caught 3 beautiful springers and landed 2. We all had a ball. I would recommend Jordan to anyone looking for a great trip.
