Fishing in Port O'Connor

Perched right between the iconic Matagorda Bay and the stunning Espiritu Santo Bay, you’ll find a quaint fishing village with a long history of resilience. Heading out with a Port O’Connor fishing guide is a great way to immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of this waterfront community. Four hurricanes leveled the town of Port O’Connor in the past century, but the Texas can-do attitude is stronger.

With such an abundance of water and natural resources, it’s no wonder that Port O’Connor boasts some of the most varied wildlife in the area. The inshore waters are rich, so you’ll find Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, and Black Drum wherever you turn. A half day trip is a great introduction to the inshore fishery, while a Flounder gigging trip gives a real taste of Texas fishing.

The Gulf of Mexico is a short boat ride away as well, so if you’re looking for some deep sea action, you won’t have to look far. Snapper, Grouper, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Wahoo, Billfish – they’re all in the cards. Just make sure you dedicate enough time to cover these fishing grounds. A full day or more is probably the best idea if an offshore adventure sounds appealing.

When it comes to finding the best guide, you’ll have no issues in Port O’Connor. Fishing is a way of life here, so you’ll see fishing charters lined up at the docks. Just head on down to the water, take your pick, and sail out!

Rules & Regulations

Since fishing guides in Port O’Connor usually don’t provide you with a fishing license, you should buy one before your trip. If you want to keep Bull Reds, make sure you have a Redfish tag as well.

Port O'Connor Fishing Seasons

January

The start of the year is as solid as it gets in these parts. Whether it’s Specks, Redfish, or Black Drum, you can get a lot of work done with a skilled guide.

February

February is usually reserved for Speckled Trout fishing. They’ll be big, numerous, and generally unfazed by the windy conditions on the water.

March

As the temperatures slowly start to rise, we welcome spring fishing in Port O’Connor with open arms. Specks and Sheepshead are the flavors of the day, with some Jacks thrown into the mix as well.

April

The weather in April can be unpredictable, but that shouldn’t interfere with fishing too much. Redfish and Speckled Trout remain the main targets for inshore anglers.

May

This time of year usually means viable offshore fishing. Amberjack will be all over the deep waters, along with Kingfish and increasing numbers of Mahi Mahi.

June

June tends to mark the start of the federal Red Snapper season, meaning everybody will be trying to land as many of the bottom feeders as they possibly can!

July

It’s a great time to be fishing pretty much anywhere! Whether it’s inshore for Redfish or nearshore and offshore for Snapper, Kingfish, and Mahi Mahi, your work’s cut out for you.

August

It’s hot outside, but there’s also plenty of fish to catch. Mahi Mahi and Kingfish rule the offshore, while Specks reign in more shallow waters.

September

September is a great time to try your hand at Tuna fishing. Blackfins and Yellowfins will keep you very busy if you play your cards right.

October

The Redfish bite is so hot this time of year that the local jokingly call it “Red October.” Join the hunt in the inshore waters and hook some Bull Reds.

November

If going after Blue Marlin in the deep blue sounds like something up your alley, go for it! Alternatively, it’s a great time for some Flounder gigging.

December

Winter has set in and the inshore waters are very clear, making it a perfect time to do some sight casting inshore. A special treat for the fly anglers out there!

As expected it was busy being July 4th weekend, and the wind was real tough to cast where you wanted to, but our guide was great and got us in some calmer spots to get the job done.

Most of the time I have fished Port O’Conner I got my limit on redfish or trout; not so this time as redfish was slow and we failed to get our limit on trout for July 1st and July 2nd, but still had a good time.

Decide if you want to fish artificial for trout and reds or if live bait is more your style. There are big fish to catch and release also. Just look for the guide that suites what you want and not be disappointed.

Stay calm, I know you have a big expectations because maybe you paid a lot. Give the Capt a chance to work his magic, because everyday is not the same, they have to adjust to everything that the day is giving at the moment. Once they figure it out, promise you'll have a blast!

Make sure to contact your captain before you book a trip. Ask questions about what fish are biting and explain what type of fish you are wanting to focus on. This helps your guide know what bait and tackle to take.

I highly recommend coming here around this time of year. You always here “ we went out but didn’t catch anything”. Well that wasn’t the case here. We caught fish the entire time we were here and got to take back enough food for a large fish fry. We will definitely be back.

Capt. John Ashley was very friendly and knowledgeable of all the bays. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip the entire day. It’s definitely shows that he has guided for quite some time. It started off a little slow, due to nature being the way she is, but come around noon it picked up really quickly and we came home with four keeper reds. Even cooked and ate part of the catch that night. I’m already planning a trip for the fall.

4.7/5
Fish were less than co-operative during this trip. Capt. Josh was very good with my granddaughters and tried to find the fish. We did get into some fish, and my granddaughters were overjoyed. He was very apologetic and made every attempt to put us on fish. I am booking another trip with him. Highly recommended.
