This area, where the rich waters of Galveston Bay meet the mighty Gulf of Mexico, is a prolific fishery that’s bound to give you a run for your money. Water flows in and out of this skinny passage, bringing with it a variety of fish species you'll be able to target.

When it comes to the fish, there’s hardly a more unique spot in the area. You’ll find all the inshore stars, including the famous Texas trifecta of Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. Black Drum, Sheepshead, Tarpon, Mackerel, Sharks… whatever side of the pass you’re on, these fish are all in the cards!

Depending on where you’re heading out of, you can book either a half day or a full day trip. If you’re looking for a family trip you can take your kids on, consider booking a half day. The more experienced anglers might enjoy a bit more time on the water, and heading out on a full day trip is the best way to fill the bags.

San Luis Pass Fishing Seasons

January

Despite cooler water temperatures, you can still start your year off with a bang by heading to San Luis Pass, where you’ll find Bull Redfish and Speckled Trout making an appearance.

February

Visit the pass in late February, and you’ll be greeted by huge Black Drum! Redfish and Speck fishing remains strong, and you may encounter tasty Sheepshead, too.

March

The Black Drum run continues through the beginning of March, and swarms of Spanish Mackerel enter the pass from the Gulf. Head under the bridge to target the spring Specks that gather here.

April

Spring has truly sprung, and with it come some world-famous Shark species! The waters of the Gulf push Bull, Tiger, Blacktip, Hammerhead Sharks, and more into the pass.

May

In the waters under the bridge, you’ll find Jack Crevalle, trophy-sized Trout, and Shark species lurking. The bay and Gulf sides of the pass are both plentiful, with Bull Redfish being a popular catch.

June

This month sees anglers from far and wide flocking to the pass to take advantage of the incredible Redfish population! The warm weather brings Tarpon, Shark species, trophy Specks, and plenty of other species, too.

July

The pass is brimming with world-famous fish from both the bay and the Gulf: Redfish, Speckled Trout, Tarpon, Sharks, and Jack Crevalle are all on offer. Bull Reds and Gator Trout are especially plentiful in the bay.

August

If you’re looking to fish the pass now, make sure you book well in advance – the warm weather and abundance of species on offer mean that charters are in high demand! Speckled Trout, Sharks, and more are on offer.

September

Temperatures start to drop, but the fishing stays hot! Redfish flock in high numbers to every part of Galveston’s bay system, which means you’ll find plenty of them caught in and around the pass.

October

It’s spawning season for Bull Redfish and Speckled Trout, so if you want to hook yourself some tasty table fare, this is the time to visit! These fish make homes between the sandbars of the pass in huge numbers.

November

If you want the waters to yourself, November is a great time to test your skills at San Luis Pass. Many of the Gulf’s species have moved on, but you’ll find huge Redfish and Speckled Trout in abundance.

December

There’s still time to end the year in the best way! Head to the pass and get ready to get your share of  Bull Redfish and trophy-sized Trout that this part of Texas has to offer.
