Unlike other states, Cobia come right up to shore in NC, giving you the chance to land a prized catch in state waters. Test your trolling, bottom fishing, and jigging skills all in a morning’s work as you go after these beauties in the Tar Heel State.

What to Expect

Revered all over the country, Cobia are a special fish. Known for their tendency to do anything they can to get off the end of your line, they’ll put up a serious fight to come aboard.et ready for an intense battle to land some meat.

What kind of trip is for me?

With the fish coming so close to shore, you’ll have the added benefit of being able to land a Cobia on a trip as short as just four hours. Beginners and families can take advantage of these trips and get used to the open ocean. You’ll go beyond the barriers in the Atlantic to reel in your first fish.

Experienced anglers can make the most of North Carolina’s Cobia fishing by spending a full day or even longer on the water. Whether looking to stay inshore, or combine your Cobia fishing trip with some big game fishing offshore, there’s a wealth of trips on offer for you in NC.

Where to Go

All of North Carolina’s coast is geared up for fishing. With Cobia inhabiting the waters up to three miles out, you’ll be able to target them anywhere in the state. Take a charter from as far north as Duck, all along the Outer Banks, or down in Morehead City or Wilmington and get your hands on these beasts.

When to Go

North Carolina’s Cobia fishing season usually opens on May 1st, when the peak fishing season is about to take off. Preferring warm waters, Cobia migrate north from Florida along the Gulf Stream, making an appearance in NC around mid-May. They stay in huge numbers for a month or so, before gradually making their way further up the East Coast. But don’t worry – there’ll be plenty of stragglers for you to target throughout the summer!

How to Prepare

Depending on whether your captain goes offshore or not, you could be fishing from a huge offshore sportfishing vessel or a smaller boat like a center console. The former will have all the amenities you’d expect for a long trip to sea, including a toilet, while the latter may be a bit more basic. In any case, you’ll be expected to bring your own drinks and snacks aboard to make the most of your day.

North Carolina Cobia fishing is even easier than you thought, with your fishing license covered by your charter. There’s nothing left to do but get ready for your next fishing adventure!
