Striped Bass are one of the primary gamefish on the coast of Maine. They are a migratory species that travel north along the coast in the Spring and arrive in Maine around May and remain in the area until early Fall. They range in size from 12" to over 50". Very large Striped Bass are nicknamed Cows because of their size. They are a great fighting fish and a lot of fun to catch. This trip focuses on the fish that arrive early in the season and are not as numerous.
I love mackerel fishing. It's a great way to introduce youngsters to fishing. Always lots of action. It's not uncommon to catch 6 mackerel on one cast. You'll witness a real working harbor. We'll pass lobster boats and offshore vessels. Once out of the harbor we'll head out to Whale Boat Island. This is a prime spot where schools of Mackerel spend the summer fattening up on bait fish. Head offshore for a half-day ground fishing trip targeting cod, haddock, and pollock. We’ll jig and drift across some of the Gulf of Maine’s most productive fishing spots to reel in fresh, delicious New England ground fish.
We typically catch mackerel to start the trip. We then use the mackerel, live or chunked, or artificials, to pursue striped bass, and sometimes bluefish (summer arrival). If interested, we'll spend 20-30 minutes of the trip tending our lobster traps. You keep the legal lobsters we harvest.
This is an 8-hour trip going 10 to 25 miles offshore. We will be fishing in about 200 to 400 ft of water. With this trip you may catch Pollock, cod, hake, haddock, cusk, spiny Dogfish sharks and other fish. We provide all the fishing equipment in bait. On these trips we often see whales, dolphin, and sunfish.

Cod are classic New England Groundfish, and Maine’s cold Atlantic waters suit them well. Rocky ledges, wrecks, and deep gravel bottoms create the perfect mix of food and shelter. Many anglers come for steady action, tasty fillets, and a true Downeast boating experience.
Most trips focus on bottom fishing. Crews use bait like squid or clams, or metal jigs that sink fast. Jigging means dropping the lure to the bottom, then lifting and lowering to trigger strikes. Strong rods, braided line, and simple rigs help keep contact with the bottom.
Charters usually run half day to full day, depending on how far you go. Rides can be choppy, so bring layers, a hat, sunscreen, and non-marking shoes. Pack snacks and a camera. If you get seasick, consider motion medicine. Captains often provide quality tackle and will clean your catch, so a small cooler for fillets is handy.
Maine offers a wide range of waters for Cod fishing in the United States. Southern Maine boats work out of Portland and Casco Bay toward offshore ledges. Midcoast trips leave from places like Boothbay and Penobscot Bay, with reefs and humps within range. Farther Downeast, boats near Mount Desert Island and beyond reach deeper structure with less pressure. When weather allows, some crews explore prominent Gulf of Maine ledges.
