Halibut fishing in Berkeley, California centers on California Halibut, a prized Flatfish known for firm, tasty fillets and hard runs. Berkeley sits on the east side of San Francisco Bay, so boats reach prime bay grounds fast. Short runs mean more time with lines in the water and steady action when tides line up.
Guides target Halibut by drifting live bait like Anchovies, Sardines, or Herring across sandy bottoms. Trolling with flashers and hoochies also works well in the shipping lanes and along channel edges. Many crews add jigging with swimbaits when bait schools stack up. Captains watch the tide, since a moving tide often sparks the bite.
Most trips leave from the Berkeley Marina and fish within the bay, so the ride is usually smooth and family friendly. First-time anglers do well with simple setups and clear deck help. Bring layered clothing for wind and fog, polarized sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Non-marking shoes are best on deck. If you get seasick, consider motion relief before boarding. Your crew typically provides tackle, bait, and safety gear, and will clean your catch after the trip.
Before you go, check current California fishing license rules and local regulations for seasons, size limits, and daily harvest. Rules can change, and your captain will help explain what applies on the day of your trip.
